Not sure I like this....

I actually like the idea of more TLD's, and have always been in favor of .xxx or .sex or something along those lines, but I don't think it should be a "free for all" for businesses to come up with a nice sounding TLD, and then see if you can get a return of your investment of your 100k. (plus the obvious money for DNS servers in a datacenter somwhere, etc)

They should have added a few "general" ones and perhaps a few TLD's focussed on certain industries.... but not declare open season to TLD's.

I wonder what is going to be happening to my company.lan domain that I have used for a (rather large) company's INTERNAL ONLY network when someone decides that would be a fun TLD to have!

Very good point, but I would imagine you have your own dns servers and can set it up to not resolve .lan as an outside tld. But then that means ISPs could also do the same thing and treat anything outside .com,.net,.org, etc. as an invalid domain. And in essence that means people paying 500k are getting zero guarantees that anyone will let that domain resolve on their own dns servers.
Does anyone know if is possible to block valid tlds or would that be against ICANNS rules? What if an ISP decided to do it?

So basically you're for forcing all porn sites in the interent ghetto? these sites are supposed to give up their .coms? .xxx solves NOTHING if your hope is to keep kids away form porn. Hell you just made it easier. How about parents be the parent and not the government? There's plenty of filters out there now.

Please explain to me where exactly did I say sites should be forced to give up their .coms?

.cum would also be a good one.
