I don't see any harm in something like [OP] after their username, if they were the original poster in the thread.
EG... usa2k [OP]
The [OP] only appearing if they started the thread.
Or something like "by original poster", placed at the top/bottom of any reply that they make in their own threads.

Get people who jumped in the middle of a 6 page thread on track with who started it all. You easily get in the middle when jumping to a search result, or a link in a thread.
Without extra work, you can't tell.
