Exactly what I am suggesting.
Get people who jumped in the middle of a 6 page thread on track with who started it all. You easily get in the middle when jumping to a search result, or a link in a thread.

Without extra work, you can't tell.

Put an ICON of some sort, beside the original poster's name to make it clear that they are the thread starter. It could help long threads stay more on-topic within the bounds of the direction the OP takes.
