| [netopia] Motorola/Netopia 3347 10 meg speed limit?
Well, here's the problem;
Previously I was running a 3 station LAN through a Linksys router that also went to an Actiontec M1000 modem. My speed on LAN was at the full 100mbps. I've recently upgraded service with Qwest and they sent me a new modem/router all in one, the "Netopia 3347".
After adding 10/100/1000 NAS to the system, I was copying files and noticed it running particularly slow. Vista tells me the transfer rate is at 10mb/s. So, I run a benchmark in SiSoft Sandra and sure enough, my LAN speed clocks in just under 10.
I tried rummaging through the 3347 but I don't see any way to set the speed. As a matter of fact, the instructions state that it autodetects for 10/100 but I know that can't be the case. Also, my 12 mb download caps at 9400 (although that could be to other things), but in any case I'm trying to figure out how to get back on my 100mbps LAN speed
Any help greatly appreciated. Yes, all of my network was on the 100mb and that changed only after using the 3347. |

| the 3347 is is 10/100 capable. i have run across a couple things that cause it to force down, one is a bad cable, another is that it is hooked to another autosensing switch, and the third is that your machine is set to 10 meg instead of 100.
double check your metwork setting for the machine. if it is set to auto, change it to 100 full and see if that makes a difference.
is the machine plugged directly to teh 3347? if not, plug it up direct. if it is, try a different cable. if your old unit got true 10mbit speeds, then i doubt the cable is bad unless you broke a wire changing routers, but stranger things have happened. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| Yeah, have tried all of that unfortunately.
But I think I found out what the problem is, although I can't fix it.
I did another benchmark (aida32) and transferred between two computers. The result? 11.7 meg. So in fact, it's not limited to 10 meg, but 12 meg which the internet connection is set at. This setup is limiting my LAN speed based on my ISP cap. |

| reply to wambulance that makes no sense unless you are using public IPs and your traffic is going to teh provider and then back to you.
unplug the phone line from the modem and try it again. if it has anythign to do with LAN transfers, then you should not be able to transfer.
i have used Cayman/netopia products for years, and have literally 100's of them out there and never ran into this issue when it was anything other than a LAN side problem. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |

| You're right, it makes no sense. The data is not looping to the provider though. Straight from one computer at 100mbps setup, through router, straight to other computer it's maximum transfer on single file is 11.7
Besides, it would be impossible for it to be going through the provider as my best upload speed is 600k, so if it was looping it'd be much slower of course.
For some reason or another, all traffic is regulated according to the ISP service arrangement. In the modem, it says "12,228k down, 768k up".
Having said that, I can get every LAN device to be connected at, and recognized as 100mbps full duplex. No problem. But the router will not pull a transfer higher than the 12 meg limit. I will however, unplug the phone line and see what that does. Although, I've put my old Linksys back on and can get the 100mb transfer no problem, so it is an issue with the 3347. |

| Ok, with the router/modem (3347) completely off of the web, the transfer is still limited.
Edit; Update. I phoned Qwest and talked to a tech about the problem. As I expected, he mentioned that it was not a problem that he'd ever heard of. I can't find any information about this on the web, and nobody seems to be able to offer solution to the problem.
However, the tech advised me that he had a 3347 at home and would call me back after he attempted a file transfer on LAN. Later, I received a call and he told me that he peaked at 64mbps on a transfer of a 1gb file over his LAN. He offered that they could RMA the modem, and I agreed that this must be a hardware issue as nobody has heard of it, there are no web pages describing this problem, and the tech claiming to have an identical arrangement had no issue such as this one. I'll update when the new one comes in. |
