Rebooting router temporarily restores ADSL speed

I am on a (supposedly) 8MB connection with Bulldog. For the past month or two my connection speeds have been around 2mb.

I am on a Netgear DG834G (version 3) with firmware version 4.0.1.37.

I checked the router and it reports that it is connected at around 6464 kbps.

However speedtest.net only shows a connection of around 2 _ 3 mb.

If I reboot the router the speedtest usually increases to around 5 / 6 mb but this only lasts a few minutes before slowing down again.

Any ideas?
