Currently I have digital cable through Time Warner cable with a Scientific Atlanta cable box. My question is, if I do buy this DVR how do I hook it up so I can record television shows? Does the cable box have to already be on the channel I want to record off of? I know there is a feature to record shows if you go into the TV Guide on the cable box, so if I use this feature will it record right to my DVR? Thanks for the help!

You should be able to put your cable card in the Phillips DVR and it should (theoretically) work like your Sci-Atl box did, but maybe better.

ds5v50 : depending on the options of the DVR you will most likely have to have the cable box on the channel to record. In easy terms it will be a Daisy Chain hookup. the only way around having the dvr record while the STB is off would be to use a splitter and feed the DVR multiple ways.
