[Line Test] Wireless faster then my wired down load speeds

»/tweakr/block:···a=normal

I'm running of a linksys WRT54G and even before I set this up I always got speeds of about 4000kbs. But even my wireless laptop gets more then 5000kbs. I should be getting atleast that if not more on my desktop that is wired right into the router and used to be directly in to the modem before that.

tweak test said all my settings look ok. check out link above.

So what gives? what should I do?

Pull the router and hook the PC directly to the MODEM. Reboot the MODEM.

Run Two Speed Tests from the two DIFFERENT cities nearest to you that are listed here: Speakeasy POPs

Also, test here »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512

Note your transfer rate after about 30 seconds. Then cancel the download.

My desktop has always been connected directly to the modem and same speeds. the router did not change anything. but I ran the test directly anyways.

on the Speakeasy POPs this is what I got, I'm in Iowa btw.
Chicago: 3787 down 495 up
Atlanta: 3846 down 493 up

test512: stable at a bit over 600kb/s

• You might just be a victim of the speed test gods. 600KB/s = 4915kb/s which is close to your line rate.

• What MODEM do you have?

• Can you run a Tweak Test for the laptop?

Windows XP

This will reset the registry to default TCP/IP values.

Open a Command Prompt and type:
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Reboot.

• Retweak ....

Download DrTcp

Set Tcp Receive Window to 64240

Set Windows Scaling, Time Stamping, Selective Acks, Path MTU Discovery, Black Hole Detection to Default.

Leave Max Duplicate Acks and TTL Blank

Using the drop-down menu in The Doctor set your NIC’s (Ethernet adapter’s) MTU to 1500.

Save/Exit DrTcp

Reboot

Rerun the Tweak Test

Run Two Speed Tests from the two DIFFERENT cities nearest to you that are listed here: Speakeasy POPs

Also, test here »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/test512

Note your transfer rate after about 30 seconds. Then cancel the download.

Post the URL for the New Tweak Test. For the TWO Speakeasy Tests, Copy and Paste the speed results from those tests and note the speed from the FTP download test.

ok did what you said and here are the new results.

»/tweakr/block:···a=normal

chicago:
Download Speed: 3740 kbps (467.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 442 kbps (55.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

ATlanta:
Download Speed: 3757 kbps (469.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 461 kbps (57.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

test512: stable around 590kb/s

now I go shoot myself.

I think that you are caught up in the old speed test chase.

590KB/s = 4833kb/s which is close to your advertised rate of 5mb/s down.

How about ....

• What MODEM do you have?

• Can you run a Tweak Test for the laptop?

• Update your NIC driver?

Shark....

dude, I don't have a connection anymore through the router.
All lights are solid on the modem except the activity light is off and no activity whatsoever. But when I hook up the modem straight to the PC everything works just fine. Modem is motorola SB4100.

not my day, thanks for the help so far

P.S It just happened again without the router. now I'm totally lost.

The SB4100 is getting old. I would suggest trying a SB51xx and see if that helps.

When you put the router in or pull it out, you need to reboot the MODEM. Are you doing this?

yes I do power cycle both the modem and router.

for whatever reason when I plug the cable to the router even the green activity lights on the back of the modem don't start, which are green. But as soon as I connect the modem directly to say the laptop or desktop then the activity light comes on immidietly.

Could it be the router has died?

Is the power light on the router flashing?

Can you ping or get to »192.168.1.1/ ?

The power light does not flash. It's solid.

I don't think that the router is DOA. Are you plugging the CAT5 from the MODEM to the router's WAN port?

Let's try a hard reset .....

1. Hard Reset
a. Make sure that the router is turned on.
b. Press and hold the reset button.(On the back of the router. Use a paperclip.)

c. After 30 seconds, remove the power plug while the button is pressed.

d. Let go of the reset button and turn on the router.

No go Shark.

One thing I did notice is there is a "internet" light. That light never turns green or flash or anything, just dead. That's one light that should be solid or flashing according to the linksys installation CD.

This was an open box item that I bought. It was working fine before but I'm starting to see my it might have been an open box item

Can you get to the diagnostic pages? 192.168.1.1
You said that you can ping it.

Open a Command Prompt and type ipconfig /all
What do you get?

Just as a side note, I have seen this happen with a defective MODEM or one that has a hard time releasing the previous learned MAC. Flashing the router's FW fixed the problem.

That router looks OK to me.

Try reflashing the router FW.

When you reboot, shut the MODEM down. Reboot the router. Then the MODEM and then the PC.

Let's see if that gets things back.
