| (too old to update) Doggie afraid of thunder..... LBB  , distraction doesn't work. He LOVES the squeaky toys, but tonight during the (illegal) fireworks that our lovely neighbors have started setting off already, he ignored me when I tried squeaking all the toys and trying to get HIM to play with them.
Thanks for the suggestion though, I'm just sorry it didn't work! | |

I am curious as to how our pups deal with it. I've been popping plastic bags near them when they are eating to try and get them used to that type of sound. She doesn't even flinch one bit.
Some day I hope the lab will make a good hunting companion, so that is why I am doing that if anyone is curious.

| There's nothing you can do for him as long as the noise continues. His anxiety will just feed off any babying, coddling or distraction you try to give him. Just let him be miserable until it stops. He'll get over it.
Are they setting off illegal fireworks? If so, bug your local cops to do something about it.

| Re: (too old to update) Doggie afraid of thunder..... Do you have a cage for him? Get him used to sleeping in the cage and then when he gets anxious put him in the cage. That's what I did with one of my dogs. She got to the point where when she heard fireworks she would go lay down in her cage instead of running around.
Short of that the best thing you can do is ignore him, if you act differently during loud noises you're just going to validate his fear. It's a living being and this is just one of the things you have to put up with having a dog.

| OK, for the skatey eighth time. HE doesn't get ANXIOUS or hyper, or any of those things, he just gets real quiet and lays down under the computer desk, or wherever I am. (if I'm not here, he's under the computer.). He also doesn't cry or whine, or anything like that. It's just that I've never had a dog act any differently with loud noises,

If he's hanging close to you and being quiet (as opposed to pacing or getting worked up) then you're doing the right thing ; he's doing it because he is unsure and somewhat frightened of what's going on outside and he feels comforted by being near you because you're his boss and you aren't afraid. As I said if this bothers you buy him a cage or put his bed under an end table or something (basically give him a cave) where he can go to hide. Teach him to "go to bed" on command and when he acts this way tell him to do so. With one of my dogs she eventually just went to her bed, laid down and went to sleep, when she heard thunder.
Be thankful, I have one that thoroughly enjoys barking back at the thunder. Which is nice when there's a thunderstorm at night; I get to wake up to find her standing in the middle of the room tail wagging yapping her little mouth off.
