Therefore, when you view the list of components for a network interface, you may notice that the Uninstall button is disabled when Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is selected. In extreme cases, the best solution for this issue may be to reinstall the IP stack. But with the NetShell utility, you can reset the TCP/IP stack to restore it to its state that existed when the operating system was installed. This article describes how to use the NetShell utility for this purpose.

»support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

...or as a fix of last resort do a repair install.
PaloC posted : hello,

i use wifi connection at home. but recently i traveled and stayed at hotels where was only wired connection available. but when i connected the cable to my LAN connection on the back of my laptop it found the connection but would not assign the IP address or create any type of connection at all. first i toughed it was the hotels fault but few days later i was at my friends house and same thing happened again. i plugged the cable from his router to mine computer, it found the physical connection, it showed incoming packets comming in but nothing going out and no IP assigned at all. i have the TCP/IP set up to obtain all the info automatically.
the guy at the hotel and my friend have the routers also setup to assign connections automatically.
well i tried to do the same connection to my router at home and the connection is working. it assigns ip rightaway.
what could be wrong with my laptop?
--

..
