New users get att.net instead of bellsouth.net?

How To: Manually Setup a 2Wire 2701HG-B Gateway

This is what it says in step 8 of the above How To.

"Type the complete username in the Username field. For example, username@bellsouth.net.
Registered on or after June 22, 2008
AT&T Internet Service installed and registered on or after June 22, will have the @att.net domain
"

Are the new FastAccess DSL customers getting a username@att.net now?

That sure will be confusing when trying to help people.

Make sure to enter your user name in the format of username@bellsouth.net or username@att.net if you received service after June 22, 2008.

What about all the modems that append @bellsouth.net after the user name in case the user forgot to input the domain after their user name?

Are they going to update the firmware on all the new modems and what about warranty replacement modems? Maybe just put an insert into the box telling the customer to input the correct domain after their user name.

FAQFixer will have fun changing all of the FAQs.

As the registration note states, new registrations a/o last Mon will now be on the att.net domain.

The self installations that customers are doing will have this automatically populated when registering from the disk, it's not really affecting anything.

Have not heard of the modems "appending" bellsouth.net to anything, however some have the attreg uid in them that has caused some issues for customers when something blips during registration process. No firmware update is necessary at this time, it's still PPPoe regardless of the domain.

I'm probably wrong about the appending of @bellsouth.net if you forget to enter the domain after the user name.

I could have sworn that some of the FastAccess DSL modems did that or maybe I read it somewhere.

.
.

I tried a Username without the @bellsouth.net on a FastAccess DSL Westell C90-610030-06 after a full reset to factory defaults and got an interesting result.

Refer to pics.

After I selected PPPoA and clicked continue there was no Auto Calendar Update Configuration page and it just saved the settings and restarted. The Power, Ethernet, and DSL light was solid Green and the Internet light was solid Red.

I opened my browser and logged into the modem then clicked on Easy Login and entered my real username@bellsouth.net and password then clicked Connect and was on the Internet.

The BellSouth customizing was gone but it still had the BellSouth style GUI, but all the BellSouth stuff was gone.

I opened Command Prompt and issued the command to change the MTU for Vista to 1500 and ran the SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer and got the results below.

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
MSS: 1460
MTU: 1500
TCP Window: 64240 (multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 0
Unscaled RWIN : 64240
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 112
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON

Then I ran the Speakeasy ATL speed test and got 6500/439.

I opened Command Prompt and changed the MTU to 1478 and ran the TCP Analyzer again.

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
MSS: 1438
MTU: 1478
TCP Window: 64710 (multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 0
Unscaled RWIN : 64710
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 112
Timestamps: OFF
SACKs: ON

Then I ran the Speakeasy ATL speed test and got 6500/448.

At least I learned something out of this.

I learned how to make the FastAccess DSL Westell 6100 generic and now I can use the PPPoA that I like instead of the PPPoE that I don't plus no more of the Westell lopping 8 off the top anymore.

My luck AT&T Southeast upgrades my CO with new equipment and no more PPPoA for me.

So do these "att.net" customers get "att.net" prices?

Probably not.. why would AT&T SE rip off their customers like that? While we do pay more, we also get more to make up for it

You do understand that 'att.net' was originally used for AT&T Worldnet customers?

Which are different from what at&t Yahoo! HSI customers ('sbcglobal.net') pay...

AT&T offers three different DSL services, depending upon whether you are in an area originally served by Bellsouth, SBC, or some other ILEC.

Ex-GF has ATTW dial, and an 'att.net' email address. I have not been able to talk her into signing up for at&t Yahoo! HSI. There is a way for her to sign up and keep her ATTW email address.

AT&T "DSL Pro" 6mbps download/ 786kbps upload, $35.00/month + $50 for a modem
AT&T "FastAccess DSL xtreme 6.0" 6mpbs down / 512kbs up $42.95/month+ $75 for a modem

I don't get what is the benefit of "FastAccess DSL" is it that you get more mailboxes on a shitty mailserver? Or more access to throttled newsgroups with no binary retention? Or the Norton Security Suite (I'm trying to pay an INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER for INTERNET SERVICE not a security suite provider for a security suite or a email box provider for an email box)

BSFA Benefits:
- HomeNetworking Plus is free, free wireless gateway after rebate, or a free modem after rebate if you'd rather not have it
- Free single Static IP
- Free AT&T Security (which is not Norton... it sucks alot less than Norton)
- Download speeds are a bit faster thanks to MaxSync, and the fact that we're throttled at 6500 Kbps or so instead of syncing at 6.0 Mbps (and losing some speed due to overhead).

We do get more mailboxes and stuff, but that doesn't really affect me. We also get more local support

I have not hear of "AT&T DSL Pro". I do have "at&t Yahoo! HSI Pro". It is only $30 a month, and only 3008kbps down/512kbps up.

But there is an "at&t Yahoo! HSI Elite" package: 6016kbps down/768kbps up, for $35 a month.

I can confirm that new users get att.net.

I canceled all of my AT&T services (business DSL, residential DSL, residential voice) except wireless last week, and had a new 3Mbit standalone line installed...the technician just left.

I registered my new account and got att.net for my user ID/e-mail...however, my static IP is still showing sip.lft.bellsouth.net.

What POP3 and SMTP servers should be used with the new att.net e-mail addresses in the old BS territory?

That's a good question. I just don't know.

I bet Carl See Profile up there might know because he just set up a new FastAccess DSL account that uses an att.net User ID and e-mail address.

Carl was just here a couple hours ago and when he comes back maybe he will see your reply and answer this question for us.

Users with the att.net domain should use:

Incoming: fpostoffice.isp.att.net
Outgoing: fmailhost.isp.att.net

In theory, mail.bellsouth.net should still work for outgoing anywhere within the BellSouth network, though if you have it set up to use SMTP authentication, it may not like the att.net addresses. The mail.bellsouth.net server does seem to let all BellSouth IP addresses relay without having to authenticate.

I haven't tried to mess around with the mail functionality too much since I won't be using it... have my own domain name instead.
