Re: New users get att.net instead of bellsouth.net? said by Airwolf7:That's a good question. I just don't know. I bet Carl up there might know because he just set up a new FastAccess DSL account that uses an att.net User ID and e-mail address. Carl was just here a couple hours ago and when he comes back maybe he will see your reply and answer this question for us. I'm not sure about servers, as I solely use AT&T Webmail when I use my att.net e-mail account.
When I get home (posting this via laptop and AT&T AirCard, traveling along I-10) I will try it and report with results.

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'AT&T', Server: 'fpostoffice.isp.att.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR authorization not enabled', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18
Chatted with support and they say my account did not get set up right and they were opening a ticket. Webmail works but not outlook. |
|
 | reply to Airwolf7 That doesn't make any sense and that ticket will get you nowhere. If the webmail works then your email client should to, you just need to talk to someone who knows what they're doing. And that ticket is going to be rejected (unless there was something other issue that ticket will actually fix, but it won't help your email problem). Call back in and make sure you talk to an american tier 2. |

 | reply to Carl Anybody know which mail servers to use? I called tech support and they said mail.bellsouth.net but that did not work either. |
|
 | Hi Automate: I understand you might have an issue with the mail server name. I just finished setting up a new account ending with att.net. The proper outgoing and incoming mail server name is 'mail.bellsouth.net'. I'm in Cary NC. Hope this helps. |
|
 | reply to Airwolf7 I am setting up one of the accounts on a Mac using Mail 2.1. I was given an Att.net address. The incoming server using mail.bellsouth.net works but not with the outgoing server.. I also tried fpostoffice.isp.att.net and the SMTP address that went with it per the advise of the AT&T Help article. That didn't work either.
Anyone having better luck? |
|
 | reply to BobHelms Thanks BobHelms, mail.bellsouth.net is working after I unchecked the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" box. |

| reply to Airwolf7 I just found this on the AT&T DSL help page for setting up email accounts. There are now so many different AT&T help pages, I have no idea if this is the right one.
I don't use either AT&T or BellSouth email, I gave up on them a long time ago.
It refers to AT&T Worldnet service, and uses ports that the old bellsouth never used.
Here it is for anyone with a new .att.net email account that is having trouble.
I have no idea if this really is meant for the new .att.net.
So try it, if you wish.
E-mail Settings: Mail Server Type: POP3 Incoming Mail (POP): ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net Outgoing Mail (SMTP): imailhost.worldnet.att.net Ensure that the option My server requires authentication is checked. User name or POP name: Enter the full e-mail address in the User Name field. For example: example@att.net or example@worldnet.att.net Ensure that the option Always connect to this account using is selected, and Local Area Network is chosen from the drop-down menu on the Connections tab. Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 465 for SMTP. Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 995 for POP3. -- No good deed goes unpunished. |

 | That's what I tried first and it did not work for me |

There may be other AT&T help pages with different information....good luck.
I really think that anyone who depends on an ISP for their email, deserves just what they get.
If email isn't important, I guess it may be liveable. I depend on email, so I have had my own domain and email provider for years.
Okay, here's another one that appears to be for the old BellSouth area. It even asks you to choose either "att.net" or bellsouth.net. Oddly enough, those for att.net are the same ports that Yahoo Bizmail uses. Hmmm »support.att.net/bellsouth/asp/co···ae5c643b

TCP port 995 is the official POP3 over TLS/SSL port as per IANA. I think the combination of protocols is sometimes known as POP3S (standing for POP3 Secured, perhaps?) and I'm sure a number of other mail providers make use of it.
TCP port 465 is "unofficially" known as an SMTP over SSL port. I think it's fair to say that, since IANA hasn't registered anything on 465 and heavies such as Yahoo and GMail use the port, this isn't an uncommon configuration. |

Minus the connections configuration and a slight change in server addresses, these settings are currently working perfectly for my primary and two secondary e-mail addresses out of both Outlook XP and Thunderbird. I've been directed to use
POP3 - fpostoffice.isp.att.net SMTP - fmailhost.isp.att.net
I assume the differences are regional (or could even be completely arbitrary). Unless there's some sort of ongoing conversion/migration on the worldnet.att.net side of things, I presume the settings provided by AT&T's support site under the E-mail section will work. |

I never meant that these were not frequently used ports. Its just quite a departure from the old BellSouth ports of 110 and 25, which are also quite common.

 | For what its worth, those are the same servers mail.bellsouth.net have been pointing to for a while...
I just checked, @bellsouth.net addresses can use them as well. |
