I have a Sprint touch (ppc6900), which around here piggy backs on ntelos and alltel. I too get advertised speeds since the evdo -a upgrade, and whats funny is that I can actually play a game of battlefield 2 using my cell, when i cant using Suddenlink.

a coworker of mine is fed from the Milton/Wayne suddenlink area, and he gets 14-15mbit all day long, so I dont think it's a problem with Suddenlink per se, just the charleston area being wayyy overloaded.
That's a riot! Most days my EDGE iPhone gets faster sustained speeds than my Suddenlink connection as well. We've had company all weekend using our connection, complaining about the speed. Most of them have Suddenlink in their areas, but after this holiday weekend most likely won't even consider them in the future. I ended up switching my iPhone back to EDGE for data while @ the house, as 99% of the time there's not enough of our cable bandwidth for an iPhone + XBLive.

In any event, I'll let you guys know by Thursday what the new connection is like. SinTel assures me that if I call in and place the order Monday morning they'll have a guy here Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest. That's certainly reassuring

fyi, and just to let you guys know how f'ed up this is....

I started a 359MB download (small iso image) on Sunday, 07/06/2008, around 17:00. Today is Monday, 07/07/2008, 09:30, and the ISO is expected to be here sometime within the next 14 hours.

I'm currently locked in @256k after my daughter started her morning with a YouTube music video (that used our 3mins of 1Mb, which got us dropped to 256k).

Since most of last week was spent dealing with Pete while trying to use a mostly unavailable connection to get work done, I'd hoped I could work a few hours over the weekend. However, SL let me down yet again. At this point I'm around $80 in cell minutes talking to them, and about $180 a day that I'm losing unable to get my work packets downloaded. My company has resorted to FedEx. That's right, folks. FedEx is faster @ shipping a DVD full of data than SuddenLink is @ downloading it.

Really guys, you're being outrun by 150yr old "technology".

umm...how fast?

THAT FAST!!!

peaks and valleys...
Man, I haven't had such great service as this since my very first ISDN line in 1998. (This is supposed to be 1Mb x 256k cable, all new cable from pole to modem, 3wk old modem)

Here's some bandwidth graphs from this morning. My 128k Sirius stream won't play without massive audio dropouts.....my SuddenLink cable connection can't keep up with it. I've set my buffer to 20%, so it pre-loads for about a full 60 seconds, which still isn't enough, and after 3-4 mins I start getting dropouts again (buffer is empty, SL's too slow to keep up).

There's *nothing* else going on here...just me, my bandwidth graphs, and Sirius Internet Radio....

These images look more like Jerry Kent's polygraph test results than bandwidth graphs.

I live in Louisiana & have my internet with Suddenlink. I get amazing speeds. But I have Dish Network for HD. Have heard a bunch of people that say the same thing about Direct TV having the fuzzy images on their digital channels as does Suddenlink. It's all to do with the compression they use on their HD. But Dish has amazing pictures on all channels. And if you are into sports; Dish HD gives you the feeling of being at the event. I'm into ice hockey & football. You wouldn't believe the clarity.

it seems after the "upgrade at the head-end" things are kicking ass around here now. I do wish there were more HD channels though.

nnaarrnn are u finally getting consistent speeds? and no i don't mean the 2mbps that we had before lol.

I couldn't take it anymore and switched to verizon's 7.1/768 service. Get about 6.5/720 but constantly and pings and latency is much much much better

Yeah, after the "upgrade at the head end" I can't complain. We're opening a branch office, and we're even going to use Suddenlink over a T-1. Since after the upgrade, we're all getting kick @$$ service. Speeds are 13-16mbit to the world and 17-19mbit to anything on suddenlink's network. The slowest I've seen it has been 11.5mbit and that was at 7:30 on a friday night during the kiddies myspacing time.

I torrented Fedora Core 9.0 the other day and it ran at a VERY IMPRESSIVE 1.2MByte/sec speed almost the entire download. Latency to our datacenter in charleston has greatly improved from 20+hops with 200ms+ latency to now 15 hops every time with an average of 50-60ms latency. They even gave me a credit that I couldnt have been happier with.

Battlefield 2 still lags out every 20 minutes or so, but I havn't really dug through the traffic shaping in my router to see if I slowed it down. The Vista Media Center PC in the living room keeps a consistant enough speed now to never need to buffer any of the online concerts/movies/shows we watch.

Well that makes me mad that they finally get their sh*t together after I leave and sign a contract with Verizon.

However after all of the hassles and the constant replies of "we don't know what is wrong" from the techs I doubt I will venture back. Plus it still irks me about the $70 Speedtest Fee which I am sure they would try and charge me again for.

Do you know if they at least finally upgraded to DOCIS 2.0?

I've been docsis 2.0 since day 1, as far as I know. Maybe that's what they "fixed at the head-end" I know the ambit modems they've got everywhere are 2.0, so maybe that's what finally fixed it.

Re: Giving Up on Suddenlink

The modems are 2.0 but there system was still running 1.0 not even 1.1 (don't know if there is a diff between 1 and 1.1 just pointing their lack of updates)

well, I'm sure we can blame Charter for that. I wonder if there's any way for us to tell if we're 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0?!?!?!? Not that it would make a difference, but it would be nice to know.
