| IP Transit Questions
Hi Guys, I have been interested lately in IP Transit as a high speed connection, and I have couple of questions, I hope I could find answers here.
I contacted FLAG Telecom, and am waiting a reply from them soon. And I need more info...
1. Do I need any special equipment or is the provider going to provide everything? 2. What kind of connection is it going to be, and what kind of routers i should be using in my location? 3. What type of wiring should be used between my location and either the CO or Provider? 4. If anyone have more detailed info about IP Transit (a book or an online article), I would be glad to know about it.

If you're talking about an E1/T1, then in many cases a provider will bundle the monthly service cost with a router and CSU/DSU. quote: 2. What kind of connection is it going to be, and what kind of routers i should be using in my location?
"High speed IP transit" is such a vague term and could mean anything so the answer is - who knows? An E1/T1 circuit handoff is generally an RJ45-type connector. DS3 is usually coax. Anything higher than DS3 would be some kind of fibre connector. In a data center type environment where you can cross-connect directly into a provider it's not unusual to get a conventional CAT5e/6 ethernet handoff.
The router could be anything - Cisco, Juniper, Netopia with Cisco and Juniper obviously being on the higher end and other brands filling in the low end. If you were really getting a higher end connection - DS3 or higher - I can't imagine you wouldn't have an in-house or consulting network engineer who knew his or her stuff and therefore exactly what kind of equipment you need. Ergo I am assuming you are going for an E1/T1 type connection. quote: 3. What type of wiring should be used between my location and either the CO or Provider?
T1 will usually be brought in over conventional copper with repeaters between your location and the CO, depending on the signaling used. DS3 and higher will require fiber termination in the building. quote: 4. If anyone have more detailed info about IP Transit (a book or an online article), I would be glad to know about it.
Here's a good guide to DS1 functional criteria. Pretty in-depth technically. | |
