OWSweather Reports

Residents around Portland, Oregon.

I am predicting a historic lightning display within a 50 mile radius of downtown, mainly over and East into the Cascades by 6pm - 9pm 6/29/08 (Sunday)

The thunderstorm complex will be potent, and very electrical. Something more seen in Arizona during the monsoonal season than up there. A pretty rare treat so make plans and enjoy it!

Re: Historic Lightning Storm to hit Portland area 6/29/08

I love good booming thunder and lightning storms

I'll be out on my deck watching it if it happens

Thanks for that. Yes, there will be a major thunderstorm complex with a grand display of lightning in the Central USA fashion. Bolts everywhere. This will be happening this evening so anyone near the area have fun!

This is still on tap for my prediction. Wish I was there to see it.

This is also going to go North and Hit Seattle you guys. So anyone between Portland and Seattle will see this.

A vort max moving into an area of deep moisture and upper level divergence will interact with very warm /hot temperatures this evening over the Northern Oregon to Southern Washington area. Profiles indicate thunderstorms containing a chance of tornadic activity is possible. We went ahead and did a tornado advisory for this.

Tornado Prediction Center

June 29, 2008 - 1:00pmPDT

Tornado Advisory 001 - Latest satellite images suggest that thunderstorms will be developing in the watch box from Northern Oregon into Southern Washington. Some of these storms will have low bases, and chances of surface based development this evening will be possible into some of the night. The storms will evolve into an MCS or Mesoscale Convective System overnight with numerous lightning bolts, large hail, and damaging winds in addition to the tornado threat.

Rain just started in Lake Oswego, but it's starting to come down in buckets, with thunder in the distance.
It's a welcome relief to the 101 yesterday.....that's hard to do with no AC

I'm going to take the high road, since no one knows what's going to happen with this storm (they are worried about lightening strikes starting fires, and a LOT of our guys are in California working on the fires down there), and power down most of my electronics and just see what happens...

That's not good, those mountains (east of Salam and eugene) are already quite dry.
Lightning = fires
Even up north where the snow is still melting, The fire danger is rising fast.
I always hope for rain the week before the forth (and most years I get some)

should be more rain than danger. This might actually help the situation

It's 94º and rising (RH% is falling fast 6% in one hour! much faster than the temps would effect it) here.
but I'm pledged not to complain (too much) about the heat, My son has been at Zion NP this week were it reaches 107º daily, next he gos to the north rim of the grand canyon (only 98º at the top) and back to vegas on wednesday for the 113º finale.
