Some people might not want to hassle with getting a coupon or driving to their local store. It's far from a scam which would imply that they are losing their money and not getting any value from it. Overpriced... sure.
Most all retailers are just as bad. I was in toys r us the other day and saw a family buying a few games for some video game system. The employee actually talked the family (who didn't appear to be too well off) into buying $3.99 warranties for each game. (these were game disks... if the game didn't work initially you could exchange anyway, and if it stopped working later you would be to blame for scratching the disk) The warranty lasts 15 months if it should break. Most products have 1 year manufacturers warranty, so they're essentially charging 10% of the price as a bet that your item will break between months 12 and 15. |

Toys R Us is one of the worst offenders, I always manage to get the 65 IQ clerk that gets personally offended when I sternly but politely refuse to provide my home telephone number in order to enjoy the benefit of PAYING for the items I've chosen to BUY with MY hard earned money. -- BEWARE: "We can't expect the American people to jump from Capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving them small doses of Socialism, until they awaken one day to find that they have Communism." - Nikita Khrushchev - |
