| Westell 7500 Does Not Connect Directly From Browser...
Hi Guys:
This one is driving me up the wall! A friend has a brand new Westell 7500 Gateway Router (2nd replacement) that she is using with Verizon. Her OS is Win XP Home SP2. For the past 5 weeks, she cannot *directly* connect to the Internet either through IE or Firefox. In order for her to access the Net, she has to go through a convoluted process that involves creating a "Broadband Connection", (which creates another Internet icon in the System Tray), clicking on her MSN account, and then logging on using this Broadband Connection. In the past, she was always able to simply click the Firefox or IE icons to gain Internet access. Trying to access the router's settings through, 192.168.1.1 only returns "page not found" errors. I've tried ipconfig; ipconfig /release and renew; uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel Pro/100 ethernet drivers; shutting down/rebooting dozens of times; resetting the router by pressing on it's little, red "magic" button 30 seconds at least a dozen times, etc., etc. You name it I've done it. And, being a computer technician myself for over 18 years has not helped me one bit with this.
Calling Verizon's "tech support" has been a total exercise in futility and frustration; as they continue to refer us to Gateway and of all places, Microsoft! Plus, every single troubleshooting method they've suggested I've tried more than once.
If anyone has a possible solution, I'd be more than grateful.

| Delete that Broadband connection - set the browsers to never dial a connection - set tcp/ip properties to obtain ip and dns automatically. the 7500 has a built in router, so set up XP as you would for use with any other router, dhcp etc. then when you do ipconfig release and renew - you should be getting a 192.168.1.xx ip from the westell - then you will be able to access it and set it up to do the pppoe connection. another point - resetting the 7500 activates a built in redirecting page that will redirect the connection to the ISP's registration server - (which gives the 7500 a non-routable 10.x.x.x ip) - this re-direct needs to be disabled before the 7500 will pull a good routable ip - it can be disabled by re-registering the account or by going to 192.168.1.1/verizon.redirect.htm and clicking the disable button. if your friend got a cd with that 7500 there should be a manual for the 7500 on the cd in pdf format. Or you can look here: »www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHel···ions.htm
which should get you to here: »www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHel···ighlight

| Hello Bytebender:
Thanks for your reply and suggestions. Unfortunately, there was no CD supplied with this router. Both browsers had already been set to "never dial a connection" as well as the "obtain IP and DNS automatically". And, as I stated earlier, I had done an ipconfig release and renew several times during this campaign. Yes. The Westell is reporting 192.168.1.xx, but we still cannot access the router's Setup features to deal with the PPPOE Connection settings. The "page cannot be displayed" error comes after typing in the router's address. BTW, the "Broadband Connection" was only set up so that she could login to her MSN account, otherwise she would not be able to get connect to the Internet at all. Remember, the router is a replacement for the previous 7500 she had. (We thought it was flawed). So, the problem is not the router. This has become a real head buster.
Thanks again for your time. | |
