Still trying to cancel my Vonage service to no avail

I've used Vonage since 2004. It's been a great service. Reliable, great voice quality, etc. However, with the new TMobile @Home $10/month unlimited local/long distance service, I no longer need Vonage. I called about 6 weeks ago to cancel and the woman offered me higher priced plans and was totally illogical (like a 10cent/minute plan even). I succumbed to her offer of 2 free months to "reconsider" and was told to call by July 11 or be charged.

Well, I called yesterday, well before July 11. I only got 1 month free, not two, and Vonage refuses to turn off my service until I pay for the month they are charging me that was supposed to be free.

Be warned, Vonage is a great service, but when it's time to leave, they sure make it hard.

LOL you kidding right. Simply call your CC and stop future payments.

I'm doing exactly that. I'm refusing to pay another nickel until the service is off. The credit card I was using with Vonage is canceled.

Are you porting your number away? Be aware Vonage likes to keep ported numbers in their system to where Vonage users calling you will hear the "number not in service" message. If this happens email dslreports at vonage.com and they'll take care of it. This has happened to other people around here as well.

I just cancelled my Vonage service a week ago. That is exactly why I didn't bother to port my number elsewhere

I did try to port my Vonage number away a few months ago. I've been a customer for 5 years or so. They lied and said I was under contract and therefore not eligible for a port.

Vonage works great and for 5 years I was a happy camper but trying to leave them is like breaking up with a bi-polar wife (no offense ladies, I know many men aren't any better).

Can they? The FCC guidelines were written to allow people to port who are unhappy with their current service, just want to change, etc. ( »The FCC has expanded LNP to VOIP ) I don't think they can refuse a port because they say "you're under contract." Cellphone companies can't refuse a port for that, although they probably will try to bill an early termination fee once you ported out. Even if you're cancelling Vonage early, it's a $39.95 penalty. Worth paying if you want to move your number.

If your account has been active with Vonage for 5 years, you are in no way in contract with them. The contract I know of is for only two years (accounts opened on or after January 2007). You can port your number away from Vonage. Initiate a number transfer with another company of your choice. if you are told by any Vonage rep that it is possible, he/she is either lying or doesnt know anything about it. Ask for a supervisor or someone who is knows better. Best of luck, sir.

Porting out your number will not cancel your Vonage account. Doesn't work like a telco.

It does. but not all of the time so it's always safe to call Vonage to make sure that the account is canceled. Accounts that have their number ported out should be canceled (FCC mandated)

I found this at: »www.fcc.gov/cgb/NumberPortability/

* If a consumer has a long-term contract with a carrier, is that consumer still obligated to pay an early termination fee even if he/she ports the phone number to a new carrier?
1) Yes. While consumers who wish to switch carriers may request service from and port numbers to a new carrier at any time, they are still obligated to pay any early termination fees they may have under an existing contract, and they are obligated to pay any outstanding balance owed to the old carrier.
2) Consumers interested in switching providers should review their existing contract to determine what fees or charges would apply.
3) However, once a consumer has requested service from a new carrier, the old carrier may not delay or refuse to port a number even if that individual owes money for an outstanding balance or termination fee.

This is for wireless, but I can't see the FCC giving VOIP carriers extra privileges to refuse ports because they're under contract.

I've been with Vonage since 2004. I just called cause I was thinking of canceling and they offered me 3 months free. The trick is when they give you free months , they need to include what it cost with taxes. If they don't do this , you'll get less time than they promise.

I'm on the 4.99 plan and they gave me 3 months free , it actually works out to more than that in the long run. It cost me like 8.50 a month with taxes and everything. The lady I talked to gave me a 34.00 credit. She actually gave me 4 months..lol

I was shocked though how quick I got someone. It rang 2 times and I was talking to a rep and no on hold time.

Just call them and keep repeating "Cancel the Service". Make it annoying. Ask for a supervisor then punctuate it with "Cancel the Service".

BTW, why are you not just going mobile? I have, and I am very happy not to have phone bills.

My service is still on and I'm 5 weeks into "grace" although one month was supposed to be "free". I called Vonage tonight and told them since they are not suspending or shutting off my service I was going to start using it again and they threatened me with a collection agency. Big deal. So tomorrow I plan to hook the adapter back up and start using Vonage until they finally turn me off. Usually, if you are in grace for 4 weeks they suspend your account but not this time! I asked the rep how long they'd leave my service on and he stated that it could be a while since they had no recourse except letting me continue to rack up a monthly bill. He actually stated that. If they turned my service off, he said, I might not pay so leaving my service on might get me to pay before the bill goes higher. I told him that method wouldn't work on me. Interesting rep. At least he was honest unlike the first rep who falsely promised me 2 months free to "reconsider".

As for going all mobile (or cellular as we like to call it in the US), I still like the feel of a "regular" telephone when I make many of my calls so I continue to have MJ along with VoiceStick for inside the house calls. Yes, I have a cell phone but holding it isn't the most comfortable activity in the world. Nothing like a good telephone.

I just ported my Vonage number to call centric with no problems and avoided Vonage from charging my creidcard.

here are the steps that worked for me

1. activate service with new VOIP company and complete porting papers.
2. I reported my credit card lost 2 weeks before Vonage charges my credit card.
3. Used my Citicard Virtual credicard number system that is good for a one time use only to pay for my Vonage charges for the upcomming month. Must pay your Vonage service or you risk loosing you number before it ports.
4. Once number is ported I dont have to worry about Vonage charging my credit card because the virtual creditcard from Citicard expires when used once.

FYI Vonage just sent me an email that they are having trouble charging my account and its 15 days since my porting completed to my new service provider.

Not true. It works that way for cell phones but not for VoIP. You specifically have to call back to the provider and cancel the account.

Good luck They will not shut you off and will keep billing you each month to you call and cancel. I found out the hard way last year.

I was in a very bad auto accident and was in the hospital close to 3 months. Obviously I wasn't at home and the card I used to pay my vonage had no money on it. They kept billing me every month since I had not called to cancel. I didn't use my service for 3 months , yet they still billed me , even though it was beyond my control.

So until you call to cancel it , you will continue to be billed. After a certain time then you get a collection agency calling and they will report it on your credit.

Best advice is just to call and cancel it.
