I found out the hard way last year. <br><br>I was in a very bad auto accident and was in the hospital close to 3 months. Obviously I wasn't at home and the card I used to pay my vonage had no money on it. They kept billing me every month since I had not called to cancel. I didn't use my service for 3 months , yet they still billed me , even though it was beyond my control. <br><br>So until you call to cancel it , you will continue to be billed. <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/934561"><b>Safemaster</b></A> : I just ported my Vonage number to call centric with no problems and avoided Vonage from charging my creidcard.<br><br>here are the steps that worked for me<br><br>1. activate service with new VOIP company and complete porting papers.<br>2. I reported my credit card lost 2 weeks before Vonage charges my credit card.<br>3. Used my Citicard Virtual credicard number system that is good for a one time use only to pay for my Vonage charges for the upcomming month. Must pay your Vonage service or you risk loosing you number before it ports.<br>4. Once number is ported I dont have to worry about Vonage charging my credit card because the virtual creditcard from Citicard expires when used once.<br><br>FYI Vonage just sent me an email that they are having trouble charging my account and its 15 days since my porting completed to my new service provider.<br><br> <br><small>--<br><br></small>]]></description>

I called Vonage tonight and told them since they are not suspending or shutting off my service I was going to start using it again and they threatened me with a collection agency.  Big deal.  So tomorrow I plan to hook the adapter back up and start using Vonage until they finally turn me off.  Usually, if you are in grace for 4 weeks they suspend your account but not this time!  I asked the rep how long they'd leave my service on and he stated that it could be a while since they had no recourse except letting me continue to rack up a monthly bill.  He actually stated that.  If they turned my service off, he said, I might not pay so leaving my service on might get me to pay before the bill goes higher.  I told him that method wouldn't work on me.  Interesting rep.  At least he was honest unlike the first rep who falsely promised me 2 months free to "reconsider".<br><br>As for going all mobile (or cellular as we like to call it in the US), I still like the feel of a "regular" telephone when I make many of my calls so I continue to have MJ along with VoiceStick for inside the house calls.  Yes, I have a cell phone but holding it isn't the most comfortable activity in the world.  Nothing like a good telephone.]]></description>

The trick is when they give you free months , they need to include what it cost with taxes. If they don't do this , you'll get less time than they promise.<br><br>I'm on the 4.99 plan and they gave me 3 months free , it actually works out to more than that in the long run. It cost me like 8.50 a month with taxes and everything. The lady I talked to gave me a 34.00 credit. She actually gave me 4 months..lol<br><br>I was shocked though how quick I got someone. The contract I know of is for only two years (accounts opened on or after January 2007). You can port your number away from Vonage. Initiate a number transfer with another company of your choice. if you are told by any Vonage rep that it is possible, he/she is either lying or doesnt know anything about it. Reliable, great voice quality, etc.  However, with the new TMobile @Home $10/month unlimited local/long distance service, I no longer need Vonage.  I called about 6 weeks ago to cancel and the woman offered me higher priced plans and was totally illogical (like a 10cent/minute plan even).  I succumbed to her offer of 2 free months to "reconsider" and was told to call by July 11 or be charged.<br><br>Well, I called yesterday, well before July 11.  I only got 1 month free, not two, and Vonage refuses to turn off my service until I pay for the month they are charging me that was supposed to be free.<br><br>Be warned, Vonage is a great service, but when it's time to leave, they sure make it hard.]]></description>
