After months of it sitting half-finished, it looks as if the VRAD on 55th and South Shore Dr. is almost done. U-verse in Hyde Park soon!
What do you mean by done? About a block away from my house AT&T installed a VRAD last October and it still sits there with its power meter still reading zero. F.W.I.W about 4 blocks to the North into the Suburbs of Lincolnwood there's Comcast DOCSIS 3.0 deployed along with U-Verse. Comcast is stalling until around April to launch DOCSIS 3.0 around the Chicagoland area. Perhaps that's when AT&T will make these VRADS active? Maybe one is waiting for the other to "make a move" and show their playing cards?

To put it in some perspective, the power meter isn't even installed yet - but it has been worked on in the last week or so.

I asked an AT&T tech I saw on the street by my house, and he said he didn't know for a fact, but he thought it would be rolled out around here soon.

Considering the aggressive way Comcrap markets - I get at least one piece of junk mail from them per week - I wish AT&T would be a little bit less friggin secretive about this stuff - give us a chance to get ready for it.

jsinaiko See Profile you hit it on the head, every other day ComCast has some type junk in my mail box...AT&T is almost just as bad... I had a billing problem (and you still don't want a billing problem with AT&T) and after EVERY person I talked to they are trying to sell their Dish, after I just told them, ... I'm waiting U-Verse... Still they wouldn't stop and kept on trying to sell the Dish...

I agree, and it's pathetic in this economy. They need to tighten up CS and get us the products we want- Dish won't work where we are because of the high rise across the street.

And they need to roll out the new, "modern" service they have been promising. I usually say something to the effect of: " I know they make you do these sales pitches, and that you are graded on them, but I am not interested, and furthermore I didn't call you guys to get a sales pitch for something I don't want. So please, let's not go there and let's pursue the topic that I called you about.

In that way the CSR doesn't get in trouble for not giving the pitch - on the assumption, and it's a good one - that the session is being recorded.

Get this, over the weekend I had a Comcast CSR call me and literally asked me who I have as my telephone provider and how much I pay. I thought at first it was a little bold to ask that blatant question but I felt the need to end the charades and tell Comcast I've been using Vonage and am paying much cheaper than any offer they can throw at me. Another funny thing I noticed is the number Comcast gives me to call for "local" support(1-866-594-1234) can't even be reached from my Vonage VOIP line.

A few weeks ago, I started seeing CTA buses with U-Verse ads; since CTA buses rarely leave the city, surely this signaled that it was live in the city. Then a friend near Milwaukee & Chicago had it installed.

Still not available at my address, near Milwaukee & North. I hope it's ready by the summer.

Hi all, I recently noticed online that service was available in my area on Chicago's north side (Wellington & Hermitage in lakeview). I ordered, and expected the installer to show up and confirm that it WASN'T really available - as I haven't seen any VRAD's in my hood or on that interactive VRAD map. Well, my installer showed up and confirmed that the VRAD's are UNDERGROUND in my neighborhood - and many other areas up here. So, just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they aren't there. Anyways, the install took only about 2 hours. 3 2 HD TV's and 2 SD TV's - along with 10/1 internet and phone. No issues with the install at all. We're up and running! I switched from Comcrap, and so far so good. I do notice a slightly degraded HD picture on stations like ABC 7 and NBC 5, but it's almost not noticeable. And some HD channels like Food HD actually look a little better. I'll keep you all posted!

Sounds like something you should put in a review. Make a review so others can get an opinion about whats U-Verse like

Will do - once I've had it for a bit. I've only had it a couple hours and all that I have so far is what I commented on in my original post (i.e. HD quality on certain channels). I'll gather some thoughts over the next couple of days and will report back.

I heard Comcast was deploying DOCSIS 3.0 service to the city of Chicago on 03/31/09.

I wonder if this has anything to do with AT&T U-Verse availability in the city?

I'm sure it's both a planned upgrade as well as a preemptive strike against U-verse. Speeds will be comparable again (unless you get the 50mb plan...) and they don't want to be seen as late entries in the race.

I saw a completed VRAD on E 58th Street between Dorchester and Kenwood - that's the 1300 block of E 58th Street - about 1/2 block East of the U of Chicago Business School.

Getting closer.

Let's wait and see.... It sure is a better date than the May 27th that I was given.

Finally got fixed in the 5th inning. What a day to have problems. Great game! Wish I could have gone.

A glimmer of hope, but no details in this article.
