ATT is in the process of installing a VRAD in the alley between 37th of Lowe and Wallace. They have had 6-8 trucks working on it for the past two weeks. Talking with the installers, one said it will probably be another 6 months before it is active. |

Supposedly AT&T will have contractors out trying to sign up residents within the coverage area before U-Verse goes live. I had one come to my door to try and sign me up last November. Already had it a month by then. Same with my neighbor. |

| There's one directly across the street from a friend - 55th and the lake - and neither of us are eligable or have been asked yet.
Sheesh. They are doing a really bad job of lighting it up in this town. -- Illegitimati non carborundum

| reply to jsinaiko JS, you come from a direct fed pedestal on the west side of your building, if they do lite your condo up the will pull new cable in before the VRAD.. .but those 2 buildings across the street from you are supposedly lit...... but I haven't been in there in a whiile |

| Hey Ryder - great to hear from you - been a while.
If Unversity Park - the huge buildings across the street from me - are lit, I would hope it's just a matter of time. I haven't seen any VRADs being installed right here. The only place around here where I know for a fact that it's live is on the 5400 block of Ellis. They ran fiber down the alley and a buddy of mine over there just ordered it.
If you remember back in 2006 when you fixed my POTS at that mushroom, there was only one good circuit left. Well, it did it again last year and they used the circuit to fix it, so now that pedestal is out of time and space - so I would hope that they do run a new cable. If you have any pull with anyone, please put in a good word for us poor deprived Hyde Parkers! -- Illegitimati non carborundum

| reply to BP in Chi I dunno guys, those Cubs just might get that World Series ring before FIOS is lit.
Actually it would be nice if they rolled it out gradually as they installed those boxes.
Having worked in IT, I can't imagine a "smooth" transition just firing up ALL those boxes in one day and not having any issues. |

| I think they are rolling it out bit by bit, as the are able, but it isn't moving fast enough, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme and reason to the times and places it gets lit up. Seems pretty haphazard. -- Illegitimati non carborundum

I just discovered it, when I parked on Tahoma Ave a few days ago. @Cubs_Fan: Yes, I do remember your mentioning it. I just didn't get around to being at that exact location where this VRAD is at. |

| reply to Chibooey my first time hearing about these boxes required for uverse but have been interested in uverse for sometime now but its not aviable in my area (33rd st). Since these boxes are a requirment to get the service was wonderng whats the distance these things can go? I think i was reading someplace its only about 3400ft?
is there something I can do to request a box installation in my area, if im out of distance? |

And I really doubt a request would get you very far. Unless they think it would be a profitable area. They certainly won't do it for one person. |

| reply to wiz561 I work for at&t and my job is just selling Uverse in chicago land. To all you guys seeing a Vrad being installed in your area that doesn't mean you'll have service available right away. Reason being is At&t is regulated by the FCC and they're required to be able to offer installation with in 7 business days not limited to time porting a phone number. If not At&t gets fined by the FCC.
So even with still hiring and training installation techs the demand is so high for Uverse that At&t won't turn on areas if they can't offer installation within 7 business days. By slowly turning on areas for service this avoids upsetting potential customers by having installation appointments available in a reasonable time and also helps avoid fines from the FCC.
As for max distance from a Vrad, 3500 feet or we have to guarantee a minimum of 24-26mbps of data transfer.
And At&t is testing in chicago, michigan, and california markets "wireless uverse service from the Vrad" What this means is wireless uverse service to the house bypassing copper wire all together. This is up and running in some areas now but still in test phase. From what I was told distance is increased to 5000 feet from 3500. The benefits to this are HUGE. Faster data speeds, more HD streams, faster installs due to less line issues, more customers available to service among more. But again still in test phase.
I don't have info like availability in areas of Chicago land but if you guys have any questions feel free to ask. |

| PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post or IM me when you know something about Chicago! I know of at least one VRAD that is well under 3500 ' from me. Probably a couple.
Please check Ryder9's post above. He knows the deal at my place because he was the tech who fixed my POTS a few years ago when a bunch of other techs couldn't figure it out. His point is that they will have to lay new cable for me to get Uverse UNLESS what you are writing about comes to pass. If that happens, let the copper do it's thing and I'll go wireless! -- Illegitimati non carborundum
