That's how far I am going back. I can remember you asking about U-Verse in Uptown. I was thinking somewhere around Sheridan and Lawrence Ave.

Using site reviews as a reference (not the ideal tool, I'll admit, but probably accurate within a month or two) the oldest review is 3.7 years old. 6 years ago, I doubt anyone could have been complaining that they couldn't find it in their area.

When I used to work downtown I would eat lunch at the Berghoff standup bar a lot; great sandwiches. I stopped in there a couple of weeks ago for a fish sandwich. I couldn't believe it was over ten bucks just for a fucking sandwich. That is an insane ripoff.

I'm moving into the Stat Place Condo Assoc., which pays AT&T for UVerse in my assessment. Install date is the 19th! I will let you all know my experience ! I am coming from with an Comcast history, which was quite positive... so we will see

In my experience, the overloaded node with Comcast is at least as common. Also when one of the amps goes down - here in the city they are almost always down in a vault - you lose all connectivity and have to wait for them to send someone out. Around here that might take a day or two.

Not true - throughput is not effected by the number of HD streams one has running. You are correct that the upper limit is 3 with one more to be added soon, but no matter how many I have going at once I get a solid 11.8 downstream. Mostly it's Comcast marketing FUD. I've been very happy with Uverse since I got it about 6 weeks ago and don't miss Comcast's prices, horrendous customer service (there has been a little improvement but they have a long way to go), and really lousy DVR. I get 3 times as much disk space on the Uverse (Cisco) DVR, it's more responsive, smaller, much more versatile, and provides whole-house access. In the end the technology Comcast is using has a limited shelf-life. IPTV is the future, and the fact that AT&T was too cheap to provide FTTH isnn't the point.

As for the issue of HD streams, the idea of more than three or four TVs even being on at the same time in the house sounds downright decedent.

They installed the VRAD by my house 2 years ago and just this year are they advertising about it going door to door. I know the one by my house had a visible electric meter and it wasn't functioning during that 2 year wait period.

Don't listen to those idiots and especially door-to-door guys. They lie all the time. Ask in the uverse forum first. People there know what deals are available and what packages include etc.

As far as I'm concerned, if it's not a billing question, you'll get more honest, knowledgeable answers here than you could ever get with a call to AT&T .

I Guess I won't know till they get there to install. One difference between DSL and Uverse on my case is that the DSL is CO based and I know how far that is, but there is a new VRAD somewhere in the vicinity and that's where the Uverse is going, so the distances are different. Hopefully closer than the CO.

Just so you are aware, you only get 1 DVR. You can record/watch 4 things at once per household (quality depends on distance to VRAD) and access recordings on all tvs that have receivers. I was at 3200+ ft so they only allowed 1 HD channel and 3 SD channels max which sucks when you have more than one HD TV. If you are close enough, service is beautiful and the whole house DVR is top notch.

No I didn't and I'm gonna call em up and ask - if I'm not satisfied I'm gonna cancel the TV portion and just do Internet and phone - the only way we can keep our present numbers, one of which has been my family's number since 1936 is to go with their VOIP.

If we end up keeping Comcrap for TV it'll mean that we pay about the same as we do now. I'll report back on Tuesday after I talk to them. I'll also post the question in the Uverse forum.

Have you seen the new Comcast ads with the old tangled up phone wire yakking at the frustrated family about low bandwidth? Quite effective.

-- How does the bandwidth issue effect the VOIP connection?

If anyone knows the answers to any of these questions or can broing up anything else I should be asking I'll be grateful for any info provided. I can always move my Comcrap account across.

As luck would have it, ATT called me today, announcing that Uverse is now available in my hood. $68/mo for 24MB down internet service. $54/mo for basic 130 channel TV. They have a $29/mo promo for the first year, if you sign up for 2 years of TV right now. I have to figure out what my phone options are if I switch to fiber. I'm paying about $25/mo for basic phone right now and $33 for DSL.

I can't wait to see their next commercial featuring dumb parents and smart teens.

You are tight; it's patronizing as well as inaccurate.

At least I don't have to put up with the constant dropped calls and slow speeds that everyone I know with an iPhone has to.

I'd love uVerse - hell, I wish Verizon was here so I could get FIOS - but I'd be happy to put up with uVerse.

The idea, expressed several times in this thread that it's soooo complex that I could never understand what they have to contend with to deploy it is silly. If it's that complex maybe it doesn't work very well?

One way or the other, complexity doesn't excuse had planning, which seems to be the case with uVerse deployment in Chicago, or bad marketing and inaccurate information.

I should add that the contention that it's about not giving any info to the competition is extremely disrespectful to the consumer and shows a total lack of confidence in their product and/or their pricing model. If they are so worried about what Comcast will do when they know uVerse is coming it might indicate a fear that their product can't compete with Comcast in price, reliability, or quality.
