After I got U-verse my pings shot up 10-20ms more (than DSL), I was told this is normal which I don't mind that much because they are stable (they stay the same).
anon : I work for at&t and my job is just selling Uverse in chicago land. To all you guys seeing a Vrad being installed in your area that doesn't mean you'll have service available right away. Reason being is At&t is regulated by the FCC and they're required to be able to offer installation with in 7 business days not limited to time porting a phone number. If not At&t gets fined by the FCC.

So even with still hiring and training installation techs the demand is so high for Uverse that At&t won't turn on areas if they can't offer installation within 7 business days. By slowly turning on areas for service this avoids upsetting potential customers by having installation appointments available in a reasonable time and also helps avoid fines from the FCC.

As for max distance from a Vrad, 3500 feet or we have to guarantee a minimum of 24-26mbps of data transfer.

And At&t is testing in chicago, michigan, and california markets "wireless uverse service from the Vrad" What this means is wireless uverse service to the house bypassing copper wire all together. This is up and running in some areas now but still in test phase. From what I was told distance is increased to 5000 feet from 3500. The benefits to this are HUGE. Faster data speeds, more HD streams, faster installs due to less line issues, more customers available to service among more. But again still in test phase.

I don't have info like availability in areas of Chicago land but if you guys have any questions feel free to ask.

I have been reading a lot of stories of people getting U-Verse in large condo buildings and high rises. I was slightly curious about this, but after thinking about it, it makes perfect sense. Putting a VRAD in the basement of a large condo building and selling it to the tenants is a win-win. There is little to no line maintenance required and there are many customers in a small area. After looking further, I have come to the conclusion that my U-Verse service was one of the only installs to ever occur in the city of Chicago that was in a single family home. I also lived on the very edge of the city located to a very developed suburb (Oak Lawn.) So, what does all of this mean for us seeking U-Verse service in the city? Not too sure. I think AT&T is really feeling the financial pinch and doesn't want to dish out a ton of cash to get U-Verse going out here. As most of us know, the quality of copper is not good in town. AT&T would have to spend quite a bit per install in order to get the lines fixed up to support U-Verse.

I ordered, and expected the installer to show up and confirm that it WASN'T really available - as I haven't seen any VRAD's in my hood or on that interactive VRAD map. Well, my installer showed up and confirmed that the VRAD's are UNDERGROUND in my neighborhood - and many other areas up here. So, just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they aren't there. Anyways, the install took only about 2 hours. 3 2 HD TV's and 2 SD TV's - along with 10/1 internet and phone. No issues with the install at all. We're up and running! I switched from Comcrap, and so far so good. I do notice a slightly degraded HD picture on stations like ABC 7 and NBC 5, but it's almost not noticeable. And some HD channels like Food HD actually look a little better. I'll keep you all posted!

That area has a crap load of new construction right around the corner! At&t will pick and choose the living units they want to light up.
