I have a friend at TWC...
Their HD broadcasting is still a pretty new thing, and has been somewhat shaken up by their sale a few months ago. For each feed (SD and HD), there is one version that goes out nationally to all content providers, which includes the "national" version of Local on the 8's. Cable companies who wish to provide local weather data have to install a "Weather Star" at the headend office, which calculates the data to be shown and dubs it over the national feed.
As far as I know (I'll have to check with my friend again), the WeatherStar systems aren't designed to do HD feeds yet, and they are developing a new model that will do 1080i. |

That matches what I'd heard about this. When DirecTV first added TWC HD, it had zero HD programming on it. It took some time, and they eventually started adding specials in HD - very slowly. It's going to be some time, I would guess, before we start getting local forecasts in HD. One other solution - go to WS Local for your local forecasts. I can't remember the last time I went to TWC - I'm not a big fan of waiting for the 8's to get my local forecast. |

| reply to JPL said by JPL :You know, you could opt for the HD DVR now. It's only an extra $3/month, but gives you a couple big advantages I was considering that JPL, but I like to run 1 TV out of the box outputs. As I understand it HD DVR has no coax out. Means I'd have to make a composite in place after the wire (Y R/W) was run outside, into the attic, into the upstairs room. Can't decide if it's really worth it. |

Correct, it doesn't have RF (coax) out, but you can always pick up an RF modulator to convert to coax - they're pretty cheap. Of course there's a draw-back with this solution - you would need the same RCA audio outputs for both TVs. I'm assuming that you're hooked up with RCA audio for TV #1 (with the S-video).
Of course you could buy something like this:
Basically, you would:
1) Run Component video cables from DVR -> TV #1 2) Use splitter cables (in link), to hook RCA Audio out to both RF Modulator input, and TV audio input. 3) Hook coax going to TV #2 to output on RF modulator.
Of course, if you're running digital audio to a receiver for TV #1, then the setup gets even simpler. You wouldn't need a splitter cable for the audio for TV#2 in that case. |

The Weather Channel has not been sold yet. It is up for sale and the latest rumors have NBC-Universal as the most likely buyer. There is a lot of information about the build-out of the new HD studio and the conversion schedule in a Weather Channel to Spend $50M on HD thread at avsforum with a recent news release here: »www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre···13985924.
Of course, if NBC-Universal buys the Weather Channel, we can expect frequent pop-ups on the screen, large bugs promoting stupid NBC reality shows or the next Olympics. |

| reply to UofMiamiGrad Hmm, the "Coming Soon" info is new. So Verizon is not planning to add CNN HD and TBS HD right away, even though they are on the effective June 30 PDF channel line-up? Ok, if I was in Fort Wayne I would wondering what the heck they mean by "soon". Later this week? Next week? In a month? |

They call this "the first in a series of channel additions coming this year", but give no other indication of when the 2nd wave of channels will start. "Series" implies more than 2, so it should be before they finish the 1st wave. |

Well the "soon" was something Dish Network subs were hearing for a long time, months, until they got some new HD last month. Hopefully Verizon's "soon" is not very long, we shall see. |

| reply to gocubsgo22 I would venture a guess that "Coming Soon" might mean, lets see how this whole roll out thing works. If all goes well with all the systems initial roll-out and all the initial roll-out bugs are worked out, they can simply push-out new channels to everyone a lot easier. So Coming Soon to me means after everyone gets the initial roll-out.
This is all opionon and speculation. You get what you paid for it. |

2 edits | reply to gocubsgo22 I would say sooner then later, because why would they have the future hd channels in the Fort Wayne IN guide already.V* doesn't work like that,if they didn't know exactly when they were being added they wouldn't be there. We all know V* doesn't supply much info.I think it will be another 3 to 4 weeks.I wouldn't be suprised if they add the other set on Portland Metro OR 7/21. -- 9929 |

According to the press release you refer to, at least on the HD end, they state that "Verizon Leads the Way With 15 New HD Channels, More to Come in July", so I would guess that would be the timeframe for the second wave. On the other hand, they go on about "...The company has now added top college basketball and football action with the Big Ten Network, which will be available in both standard- and high-definition. In addition, Verizon has launched two other new HD sports channels - Versus/Golf Channel, which features live events and original programming from Versus as well as PGA Tour and additional golf coverage..." I see neither in the PDF listing, and I recall Verizon backing away from listing Versus/Golf on their HD addition press releases some time ago. (I just double checked to make sure the press relase date was indeed July 1, 2008!!). |

| reply to gocubsgo22 Could it be the second wave will be when NY and Oregon get the new lineup (aprx the same time). I dont think they would send a new channel lineup flyer in the mail to a big market like NY and it be wrong....(Or maybe they would.) I just hope they get there act together by then. |

Their 15 HD doesn't jive with the 21 people here have been talking about. It is today's press release, but who knows when it was actually written, and certainly doesn't seem to have been fact checked. |

I dont think they would send a new channel lineup flyer in the mail to a big market like NY and it be wrong....(Or maybe they would.) I just hope they get there act together by then. I was thinking the same thing...that some channels will go online at the same time (in other words, what is the second wave for Fort Wayne will be included in the NY update). However, I would also say to never think its a sure thing. It will depend how earlier upgrades go, or perhaps it is a contractual holdup.
For example, I am in the Northern NJ area and we benefitted by not being the first to get the IMG...there were so many problems to iron out. Nonetheless, I received a recorded phone call from Verizon last August notifying me that the new IMG would be installed that month. In actually, it took another six months until it was actually installed!!
In the case of new channels, I think it might be a case of contract details more than technology problems. Or perhaps too many members of their upgrade team are on summer vacation. |

| reply to gocubsgo22 Looking at the Verizon pr and the other info, my guess is that the "coming soon" HD channels will be added by July 21. Fort Wayne is the testbed roll-out and Verizon is adding a lot of new QAM channels all at once, so the problem is likely technical, not a contract issue. They have to add the channels to the signal path from the Super Head End to the VHO, add channels to guide data, update the channel map & encryption code data, make sure that the QAM channels & signal paths are working at all the COs in the market, and so on. Get the kinks out in the first market, then roll-out the channel line-up overhaul & HD expansion to the next market.
What would be neat is if someone in Fort Wayne with a QAM tuner (capable of going up to ch 135) could provide a summary of what QAM channels they now have. Just a first cut list of the QAM channels, don't try to list all the sub-channels. However, any QAM channel with only 2 sub-channels is likely to be where two of the HD channels are. Up to now, all of the QAM channels have been in the 55 to 126 range with a number of gaps in that set. Have they moved the local digital SD & HD channels from QAM 71-7x? |
