afiggatt : Looking at the Verizon pr and the other info, my guess is that the "coming soon" HD channels will be added by July 21. Fort Wayne is the testbed roll-out and Verizon is adding a lot of new QAM channels all at once, so the problem is likely technical, not a contract issue. They have to add the channels to the signal path from the Super Head End to the VHO, add channels to guide data, update the channel map & encryption code data, make sure that the QAM channels & signal paths are working at all the COs in the market, and so on. Get the kinks out in the first market, then roll-out the channel line-up overhaul & HD expansion to the next market.

What would be neat is if someone in Fort Wayne with a QAM tuner (capable of going up to ch 135) could provide a summary of what QAM channels they now have. Just a first cut list of the QAM channels, don't try to list all the sub-channels. However, any QAM channel with only 2 sub-channels is likely to be where two of the HD channels are. Up to now, all of the QAM channels have been in the 55 to 126 range with a number of gaps in that set. Have they moved the local digital SD & HD channels from QAM 71-7x?

Of course, you may need to call Verizon to have them turn on your national HD channels (sometimes they don't do that with SD customers).

4) It'll grandfather you in. It seems that Verizon likes to institute pricing changes with grandfathering clauses - e.g. my brother is paying $13/month for his HD DVR (I would be too, except that I got the media manager DVR, the price of which hasn't changed since I signed up). If Verizon starts up an extra pricing tier for HD, or if they raise the price of their HD box, it's likely that, by getting it now, you would be grandfathered into the current pricing.

Once they get the multi-room feed working for HD programming, I'm seriously thinking about upgrading my SD STB to an HD STB - it'll be an extra $5/month for me, but I think it'll be worth it.

It's really a subscription channel like the International channels such as RAI and TV5. It costs $14.95 a month but I've never seen Setanta offer channel content via per event pricing to domestic (as opposed to commercial) subscribers. Of course, many years ago they got their start by offering PPV games on BUD to bars and restaurants and I believe they still do that in North America and Europe today.

The area actually says "Pay Per View / Subscription Sports" and Setanta falls into the latter category. And it is a 24/7 service, so it should be available at all times for their subscribers. On Globecast, who specialize in international programming (and where FIOS new international stations are originating from), they list Setanta under Ireland. However, since it is a all-sports English language station, I think it is better that they grouped it with plans such as ESPN Full Court and probably other subscription sports plans as FIOS adds to their lineup in the future.

And, there are a lot of coming soon channels, many due by the end of 2007. Verizon time, I guess. Still, despite these little quirks, the guide functions well (except for things like the sparse program info) and another guide update is due later this summer, I believe.

Now, the Fort Wayne pdf definitely has channels listed that weren't included in this update/upgrade. Now usually Verizon likes to roll out national channels nation wide on the same day, but because it is in the middle of shuting off all the analog channels, the lineups are being realigned market by market. Ironically, the new channels seem to be rolling out in the opposite order of the intial Verizon FiOS TV rollout, in which the initial two markets to get the service, are the last to get the upgrade. Or is there regulation that prevents this from happening (e.g. 30 day advance notice)?
I think the 30 day advance notice requirement still applies. The advance notice does not apply to adding new channels at unused channel numbers, but for moving channels or for that matter, removing channels. This is really a legacy of all analog systems where there is/was no guide data. People might sit down to watch the Home Shopping Network on channel 65 and instead find another another there with no idea where the shopping channel ended up. People taping shows manually with VCRs before they go on vacation would want a lot of advance notice. With digital guides, really don't need 30 days notice, but the rules are still in place.

So, no I would not expect the posted dates on the Fios channel line-up web page to move up. As for why Fort Wayne, IN. It was close to the last VHO to be added; Fort Wayne is DMA #107 in population. Verizon likely has the fewest subscribers there so far among all the VHOs, so as noted, it is a logical guinea pig market. Notice the 3 weeks between Fort Wayne roll-out and NY. Then the channel revamp & HD channel expansion pace speeds up. Need a initial shakedown block to fix problems, make sure all the channels are coming in, make sure the new channel maps are working right, time to refine the procedures for adding a whole bunch of channels at once, AND time to get the CSRs ready with memos/classes to handle a flood of phone calls (well, to the extent that the CSRs will ever be "ready"). Verizon does not appear to be doing a very good job of notifying people, but even they were, there will still be a flood of phone calls from people who can't figure out that their favorite channels have been moved.

The bottom line is that the long awaited HD expansion has finally begun! Even though it sounds as it is a messy process, but they are using Fort Wayne as the test / shakedown roll-out.

To the 1st post, do not expect MSNBC-HD to be added. It was obviously a mistake in the original new line-up. MSNBC does not have a HD channel yet; they are planning to start up a HD channel early in the 4th quarter, presumably October.
