@thedominion.ca | reply to milnoc Cant do that they have IME Filtering for there data plan. All NON-Rogers Phones arent able to use the good data rates. It cost about $15CND per MB on a NON-Rogers branded Phone. |

Interesting, one company has what looks like a monopoly on gsm in canada. -- At first I thought everyone on the highway was drunk but then I realized I was driving in Florida |

Increased demand + Static/Limited Supply = Higher price |

What Karl forgot to mention is that since 2004, when Robers bought out Microcell/Fido, we now only have 1 (ONE) GSM provider in Canada. This is essentially a MONOPOLY as no sane consumer would ever consider a freedom restricting CDMA provider.
Argh !!!!

You can cancel the contract, keep the iPhone, pay the ECF and the other BS and use your existing SIM with your existing plan. This may not be very advantageous for Robers users, but for Fido users that still have an old grandfathered plan pre 2004, it's a VERY viable solution, especially with the 30$/300MB addon.

It is Monopoly, that's why we need another GSM player in the mix... Rogers = Fido = ONE company = one GSM player = MONOPOLY = screwed Canadian Customers! Sad but true... Yes, and all this thanks to our BS government/CRTC that allowed Robbers to buy Fido back in 2004 ! It sickens me sometimes when i see our own government screwing us. Adi |

The good part is that iPhone IMEI numbers can be cloned VERY easily.(see ziphone) So all you need is a cheap Robers phone to copy the IMEI number from and you can enjoy the good plans too

Imagine that you move to Canada with your unlocked GSM phone (common in Europe and Asia) and are told that your ratified GSM standard-meeting phone capable of use on the Rogers/Fido network is not allowed to be used under the same terms and conditions as a phone that Rogers supplies.
Hell, it could even be *exactly* the same model number and they'd still screw you on the data plan.
The government really screwed up when Fido was taken over by the banks. They should have allowed T-Mobile or somebody else from outside Canada to buy Fido and force the domestic companies to be honest (if that word could ever be used in connection with ANY telecom / cable company in this country), and competitive (I know, again with the pipe dreams).
I think that the CRTC should void Rogers rights to the airwaves for 3 months as a penalty. Bye bye Ted.
I'm sure that Ted would like to prevent anyone from accessing the internet at home via Rogers Hi-Speed unless you bought your computer from him too. |

Fido was the ONLY carrier to offer :
1) CityFido = unlimited local calling for 40$ a month including the SAF !! No other carrier has offered unlimited calls ever since, and this particular plan was instantly killed by Robers as soon as they bought Fido.
2) Unlimited Data for 50$ !! I do mean UNLIMITED DATA here. You could put your SIM card in Any GSM device including DATA cards and enjoy unlimited DATA even in the states for that price. Again, NO carrier has offered something even close to this in Canada with no restrictions like Fido did.
You need to rethink before you spew BS like that again. Fido was the best carrier in Canada. In fact, they were the ONLY GSM carrier long before Robers saw the light and switched to GSM as well.

I still remember back in 2004 when i heard that Robers was going to buy Fido... I KNEW that prices will triple and that the good plans would be axed on the spot. And that's exactly what happened. The entire population got screwed in the end all thanks to the dead meat government/CRTC.
A sad moment in Canadian history.

I have a hard time believing you. I've been a Fido user for 10 years and I've never had a problem with coverage/bad signal. Hmm, maybe it's the fact that I've always used GOOD phones and not the welfare phones that Fido sold for 0$ (or that they currently sell now for that matter).
