It's not all Apple's fault there. They should of gotten out of that stupid AT&T exclusivity contract before the iPhone 2.0 came out. -- Mac Chatter »www.macchatter.net

CDMA only has a small percentage of the world market. It makes not sense. CDMA is also an anti consumer standard that is everything Apple does not stand for.

And Apple is the most anti-consumer locked down company in the phone space, just look at the ultimate stupidity of the App Store.
It's possible to make phones in both CDMA and GSM models! Nearly every other major phone manufacturer on earth does it! Of course, they also have managed to figure out that oh-so-complicated feature known as "MMS", maybe I'm giving Apple too high expectations here.

A free app is a free app and if the dev puts it on the App Store, everyone can download it and use it for free. Oh i'm sorry that Apple had the bright idea to be the middle men in order to insure that no viruses make it onto the most popular smart phone in the world.. ya, BAD Apple, BAD BAD Apple.
As for making a CDMA handset, again, anyone who would consider a CDMA carrier is either
1) a person who likes giving their freedom away 2) a person who never travels outside of their own country 3) someone who got a corporate plan from their workplace for REALLY cheap/Free
CDMA is for lamers who have no idea what a real cell phone is or for desperate pple who sadly enough, don't have any coverage from a GSM provider in their corner of the world.

Lucky for me, i still have a GOOD Fido 2 Fido plan from back in the day when Fido was more then just a name. No carrier out there be it Robers, Telus or Hell offers anything REMOTELY close to my grandfathered plan ! It saddens me that the money goes to Robers but i have no FREAKIN CHOICE as there is no other GSM carrier out there !
I await the wireless auction to be over so that more GSM competition comes out. Until then I'll stick to my F2F plan.

| | | EPS join:2008-02-13 Hingham, MA | The App Store is fine, except for banning all outside development on the iPhone and restricting everything to what gets Apple's approval, not to mention limiting competition- it's hilarious how everyone gives Apple a pass for what they'd condemn any other company for.
As for CDMA, CDMA has far superior voice quality, world phones exist if you really need to go outside of CDMA's coverage area (actually, when I go overseas I just don't use a cellphone)... Technologically GSM is a terrible piece of crap forced upon the world by European government authorities who wanted a convenient standard- 3G UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA is better, but in part because it takes large amounts of technology from CDMA. SIM cards are one advantage, but even they are sorely overrated due to radio bands- have fun getting that 3G phone working on T-Mobile, or even a lot of European sold phones in the US- if the radio doesn't have the right bands your little plastic card isn't going to magically give you them.

Yes, but it probably worked out for the best for Apple. Had they indeed struck a deal with Verizon wireless when working on iPhone, they would have had to produce a GSM version of it anyway if they planned on going global with it. Most of the rest of the world uses GSM, so making a CDMA-only iPhone would have limited them to North America and some of Asia only.

Of course, they also have managed to figure out that oh-so-complicated feature known as "MMS", maybe I'm giving Apple too high expectations here. I think the way iPhone was designed makes it pretty easy to make it CDMA if they wanted to. There is a module called baseband which deals with all the phone functions. So provided that Apple produces CDMA baseband, it should be pretty easy production-wise to produce a CDMA iPhone without modifying the main board. They are doing it already, it's called iPod Touch. No baseband, some additional memory to fill in that missing space on the 32 GB models that cost $100 more. -- Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies...
