| I don't run red lights but I have found numerous sources that show agencies shorten yellows at the intersections with red light cameras.
I would not have a problem with them if I knew in advance when the light will turn yellow. Those pedestrian lights with the countdowns are fantastic, unfortunately many intersections will have DO NOT CROSS lights which are impossible to see from any angle but dead on straight. In Texas for example some yellows were so short that they were against the Texas DOT regulations. Plus the City of Chicago is installing them all over as they are a proven source of revenue and are part of the budget. Aldermen clearly talk about it as a revenue source. |

| reply to adamtech78 Just stop at the green lights and wait for a fresh one to show. I've done that before when I know there is a camera and I'm not sure what the timing is. Some of them that I have seen (can't remember the specific intersection) are so quick to go from yellow to red that there's no way you could even make it through the intersection if you entered into it as the light turned yellow. -- www.donwest.org - Get in on it, Gang! |

1 edit | reply to adamtech78 I don't know this for a fact but I thought I heard that the trigger for those was just beyond the white line so as long as you're already beyond that it won't get you. They probably do it that way so they aren't nailing people who are just waiting in the middle to turn left.
So if you're 1/2 or 3/4 of the way through when it turns red, it shouldn't matter. I wouldn't stop at a green but if I'm not familiar with the intersection and it turns yellow I'll stop if not not already a few feet from the intersection.
Of course I could be wrong.
Regardless, I can't imagine anyone having to be somewhere so bad that it worth a $90 ticket or an accident. That minute and a half out of your life wont' kill you. Unless your having a heart attack and are driving yourself to the hospital. In that case, don't stop for anything. |

Agreed on the countdown timers! And yes, the cameras are only a source of revenue - I honestly don't see them making anything safer as people will be more likely to stop short on approaching an intersection and be more likely to get rear-ended (which is particularly worrysome on the motorcycle!) |

| reply to adamtech78 Are these exact enough to ticket for one lane only?
I noticed a new "photo enforced" sign at the northbound (NW? W?) Algonquin Rd exit from 53, which is a "right turn on red from right lane only" intersection.
I can understand why they put one here, people are always backed up to use the right lane and then some others will always go around everyone and make an illegal right from the left lane, but I wonder how accurate the cameras are? |

The article which accompanies the map discusses $299 gadgets which warn of red-light-camera intersections. "They are the defensive drivers who want to know when they're approaching an intersection with a history of crashes, a typical location for a camera."
The registered owners of vehicles photographed running red lights are mailed tickets carrying $100 fines. The city expects to reap $50 million in revenue this year from the fines.
Crashes decreased 30 percent, from 1,055 in 2004 to 736 last year, at intersections where red-light cameras were installed in 2004 and 2006, according to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

| reply to adamtech78 said by John Bills, deputy director of operations at Chicago's OEMC : "The biggest number that is of concern to me is a 59 percent reduction in people running red lights since the camera program's inception in 2003," Bills said. "There are still too many violations, but we are changing negative driving behavior."
So...many...things....wrong...
1. Your not changing, your profiting off negative driving behavior. 2. 59% reduction in red light running, but has there been any increase in other accident types? Such as rear end collision? 3. Nobody with a brain is going to put the time and money into an industry like this unless they were sure they could make a profit. If they really wanted to stop people from running red lights they'd put themselves out of a job. -- My Blog. Because I desperately need the acknowledgement of others.
