I use Tomato. I like the simplicity of it, and how quick it is.

I voted for and use both Tomato and DD-WRT. I use DD-WRT in the office (set up for VPN) and Tomato at home.

DD-WRT. Looked at Tomato too, but just liked the interface better on DD-WRT.

I started with HyperWRT Thibor firmware initially, since it retained the overall 'Linksys' feel to the router, at the time appeared to be the easiest firmware to install, and provided controller over wireless transmission output. Overall my WRT-54GS v2 ran well, perhaps even better then with the stock firmware.

Over time curiosity of other firmware won out and I opted to install DD-WRT (specifically v23 SP2, which was the most recent release at that time) and have continued to use and update as new releases become available (I have done so at least 23 times). I chose DD-WRT over Tomato because thought at that time Tomato had a rather nice GUI and built in bandwidth meter, I was more interested in the SNMP features of DD-WRT which Tomato did not have at the time.

The most recent change I have made is that I now run the VINT version of the DD-WRT firmware, rather then the standard version as it allows me a very reliable wireless signal (now running DD-WRT v24 (05/20/08) mega (SVN revision 9517M Eko)).

The bottom line is, figure out what features you want - and choose your firmware accordingly, you can always try a different one if you like.

OpenWrt Whiterussian 0.9 with OpenVPN server mounting and using Windows shares. Lean and mean with lots of room for extra playing.

I've been using DD-WRT for a long time now, but just switched to Tomato this morning. Going to test it out, see how it performs. The interface is faster, but that's not a big issue. The main issue when choosing firmware is the one that handles the best. If it takes an extra second you setup a setting, who cares .

Tomato is also faster with connection speeds depending on what kind of connection you have. I tried 35 mb Fios and got about 37 mb with the Verizon router. Now with DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT-54G V3 I got about 22 mb and with Tomato on the same router I got 34 mb.

DD-WRT has more features but it depends on what you need.

Used HyperWRT but Tomato is great, especially for UI that is so nice, and router is very powerful with this firmware
router: WRT54G v4

Love those numbers. I only have Comcast's Power-Boost maxing at about 32mbps to gauge and I get very similar results except... OpenWrt does a little better yet.

I'm glad we both see the overhead of DD-WRT. I said to myself: "Self! When someone else sees the same you gotta jump in." I keep seeing people posting how fast DD-WRT is and can't believe it.

Someday if I get the ambition to load up that stuff I'll get some better numbers.

I like Tomato, but it doesn't give me the option to tie the WAN port to the local LAN,like DD-WRT does.

What do you mean tie the Wan to the local LAN? What is this for or do?

Assign WAN Port to Switch option. It's a feature in the Basic Setup screen. I use this option to connect it to my Netopia DSL gateway router.

Basically,I'm using the router as an Access Point. With the WAN assigned to the LAN,it leaves all (4) four LAN ports open.

I use DD-WRT as Tomato does not work well for dual WANs.
