I use Tomato. I like the simplicity of it, and how quick it is. |

| reply to Surfinusa I started with HyperWRT Thibor firmware initially, since it retained the overall 'Linksys' feel to the router, at the time appeared to be the easiest firmware to install, and provided controller over wireless transmission output. Overall my WRT-54GS v2 ran well, perhaps even better then with the stock firmware.
Over time curiosity of other firmware won out and I opted to install DD-WRT (specifically v23 SP2, which was the most recent release at that time) and have continued to use and update as new releases become available (I have done so at least 23 times). I chose DD-WRT over Tomato because thought at that time Tomato had a rather nice GUI and built in bandwidth meter, I was more interested in the SNMP features of DD-WRT which Tomato did not have at the time.
The most recent change I have made is that I now run the VINT version of the DD-WRT firmware, rather then the standard version as it allows me a very reliable wireless signal (now running DD-WRT v24 (05/20/08) mega (SVN revision 9517M Eko)).
The bottom line is, figure out what features you want - and choose your firmware accordingly, you can always try a different one if you like. -- ...A bitter ray of sunshine |

| reply to Surfinusa I've been using DD-WRT for a long time now, but just switched to Tomato this morning. Going to test it out, see how it performs. The interface is faster, but that's not a big issue. The main issue when choosing firmware is the one that handles the best. If it takes an extra second you setup a setting, who cares . |

| Tomato is also faster with connection speeds depending on what kind of connection you have. I tried 35 mb Fios and got about 37 mb with the Verizon router. Now with DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT-54G V3 I got about 22 mb and with Tomato on the same router I got 34 mb.
DD-WRT has more features but it depends on what you need. |

I only have Comcast's Power-Boost maxing at about 32mbps to gauge and I get very similar results except... OpenWrt does a little better yet.
I'm glad we both see the overhead of DD-WRT. I said to myself: "Self! When someone else sees the same you gotta jump in." I keep seeing people posting how fast DD-WRT is and can't believe it.
Someday if I get the ambition to load up that stuff I'll get some better numbers. |
