DIR-655: Thoroughly confused by all those firmware versions

Hi everyone,

I've recently bought a DIR-655 in Spain, but it seems that my router came from a distributor in France.

I wanted to upgrade the firmware, so I visited many dlink sites:

France's FTP site:
»ftp://ftp.dlink.fr/DIR/DIR-655/Firmware/

Spain's FTP site:
»ftp://ftp.dlink.es/Wireless%20N/DIR-655/Firmware/

Sweden's FTP site:
»ftp://ftp.dlink.se/Products/dir-produc···irmware/

USA's FTP site:
»ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Firmware/

And Russia's FTP site:
»ftp://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-655/Firmware/

It's really difficult to discern which firmware is better, or newer. The dates are all messed up and the changelogs are often missing.

Do they develop different firmwares for different countries?

Are the firmwares developed by different groups of people in differente places or is there just one development team in Taiwan?

Does a higher version number mean that the firmware is newer?

Which version of 1.12 is newer? The one from Singapore or the one from Russia?

Man, how I wish Dlink was a bit less chaotic in this regard!

Regards.

I forgot to ask one last question:

What do the "WW" characters mean in the russian changelog?

World Wide? Wild West? Wink Wink?

Whatever you Wish????

At any rate, seems this router model is now off D-Link's update cycle anyway. lol (And what ever became of that "secure spot" beta??)

What's on the box you have? I the white label are it should say:

A1, A2, A3, B1, B2 for hardware
.....1.10, 1.11 or higher for firmware

A3 and up for hardware would be nice

A1 had heat problems and the heat sink was glued on, which kept coming off. A2 started with the blue amber lights as A1 had green amber lights. A3 has new PCB and a few new things like you can't use prior firmware that you could with A1 and A2.

Singapore has B series hardware..

It's a shame such an expensive router, is now no longer updated. Last update is over 7 months old. You spend good money, and the company can't even keep the firmware updates up to speed.

I would like to know if there is anything newer or better than the 1.11 firmware for US A3 models.

Just curious ast to yhy you are looking for an update?

I have two DIR-655's (A2 and A3), they are rock solid, doing everything I want them to do. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Hi,

I have an A2 hardware revision. And I'm currently running v1.11EU (b02) firmware, dated 2007/11/5.

I don't have any particular problem right now with the router, but I always like to mantain my equipment updated.

I wanted to upgrade to v1.12, but this is so confusing that I'm not sure which version should I get.

Regards.

Agreed.. I'm in the UK, run an A2 version (blue LEDs) with 1.11 (2007/12/05) version. Never let me down yet, never have to reboot it unless I tinker with QOS, etc

Identical setup here M8,and it immediately reduced my stress levels by about 90%,most of which had been brought about by struggling for 6 months with a cruddy Linksys WRT54GS-UK.....a hideous beastie for sure, and barely fit for purpose IMHO.

Any idea what this is?
DIR655A3_FW111_MSBetaB39.bin

Dated 2008 on the US dlink ftp link in the original post. Is that newer than the 1.11 on their website?

There was speculation in another thread that a similarly named beta firmware for the DGL-4500 was to test a supposedly better firmware for XBox Live connectivity. I assume that the "A3" in the firmware name means that it's only for A3 hardware revisions.
