[IL] Your opinion on telephone service?

I live in Clinton, Il. I have Mediacom cable including stars, hbo, sho, cinemax, etc, I have Max HSI (20/2) and I am tempted to get the phone service. My questions are: How do you like the service? Has anyone used a fax machine with it successfully? Can I still maintain my current speed package or will it be downgraded to a slower speed even if phone is not in use? Any thoughts greatly appreciated. I currently pay Verizon $45 dollars a month just for service and only feature is caller id. $29 a month after promotional period would be nice.

I have the phone service and I love it! I have faxed a couple of times with no problems whatsoever. You can keep your max speed, I had it when I first signed up for phone but downgraded to save some money. The phone service has its own dedicated bandwidth so using the phone doesn't drop your speed down. I have been happy with my choice to switch.

I had it for about 6 months and couldn't get rid of it fast enough.. I had it about a year or two ago though so it may have gotten better. The only reason it worked half the time at my house was because I work in IT..

My phone service with Mediacom has been excellent. I had some very minor issue with it early on when it first came out, but I've had almost no problems for months.

Knock on wood!

For the most part I have been happy with the service and voice quality. My internet speeds are normally excellent and I think that helps. There is the occasional outage (probably not even once a month) but it is usually back within an hour. I can really only remember once, during a large outage across Eastern Iowa, that it was down for longer then a a couple hours. I did have some voice quality issues a few weeks back (people on the other end couldn't hear me or I sounded choppy). My internet speeds were sporadic at the time but that lasted about a week and has gone back to normal. I tried calling a few times for support during that time and got a busy signal.

Overall, it is not as reliable as a regular phone line. But, it is cheaper and the quality is good enough and service is consistent enough to not make me switch back to Qwest.

Have had the service for about as long as it's been offered and very few problems. Voice quality seems to be at least as good as POTS. No regrets.

I'm not happy with it and plan on cancelling service.

I keep getting dropped calls (80% of the time). I'll answer the phone and get a dial tone instead of the caller. My recourse is to check the "last caller" ID feature (*69) and call the party back.

It was good for the greater part of the year I've had it but oddly enough since the debut of 20/2 service it's been a buggar.

I seem to recall back when the 10/1 service came on-line my 3/512 started to stutter till I stepped up to the plate and ordered the VIP package.

My signal levels at the modem and my speeds are on-par just under 10/1: 9/900 as It's been for over a year.

So damnit I smell a rat. Oh, and I can remember the sorry days just after the AT&T@home/Mediacon swap-out: from an honest uncapped 1.5mb to sometimes less then 800k/80k speeds...grrrr

I have had the phone service for the last year or so and am switching back to verizon on the 10th. Over all the phone service is good but when the internet is out (especially during/after a power outage) it takes a while to get phone service back. Verizon is running a 29.99/mo deal for one year so I will get the reliability of a line line for the price of mediacom's phone service (give or take a buck or two)

I have the phone service and not be any happier. It has worked great except for a few outages which affected all of my cable channels and internet. I have also received and sent out faxes without any problems what so ever. I just wish i could also switch my second line to Mediacom also.
