[ps3] Could this be the heart of the PS4?

It looks like someone over at Beyond3D stumbled over an updated Cell Processor Roadmap. They are reporting that the roadmap shows the next generation Cell processor could have:

-4PPUs, 32 SPUs
-2010/11 timeframe
- 3.8GHz
-TFlop performance.
-Faster SPE communication
-More on chip memory
-Performance on PPE significantly better
-Performance per SPE equal or better (Significantly better on applications that benefit from new instructions)

..I wonder what kind of performance Folding@Home would have on that? Hopefully Stanford is still around then and Sony still supports them on the ps4.

Considering Sony has slated the PS3 to have a ten year lifespan I don't think this will be it.

I think the 10 year life span, is only them "supporting" the ps3, kinda like whats happening now with the ps2.

Not true. One of the reasons they used to justify going Blu Ray on the console was the "10 year" life cycle plan of the PS3.

Actually he's right. I expect PS4 in 2011-2012 at the earliest. I doubt we'll have to wait until 2016 for a PS4. With Nintendo and Microsoft launching their next consoles in 2011-2012, I highly doubt we'll have to wait 4-5 years after that before the PS3 is replaced.

I'm not sure when Sony plans to release the PS4. Though 2008 seems a bit early to be finalizing a prototype in my opinion.

It's not a prototype. The processor is just in the works, and it'll have many uses. The PS4 processor will be done in 2010 or so.

I know he is. I've learned to take what Sony says about it's products with a grain of salt these days.

Agreed. Sony claimed to have been supporting the PS1 until 2005 or so, but you pretty much stopped seeing any new PS1's, games, or accessories made for it at all within a year after the PS2 came out.

I have to disagree at least on a technical level. I remember specifically seeing PS1 games released long after the PS2 came out. Last one I saw came out around 2005 or 2006 (don't quote me on dates, but it was definitely years after the PS2 release). Granted releases were very few and far between; much less than a year or two after the PS2 launched, but games were made and sold.

Well, by that token, you may as well say that the Dreamcast was still being supported up until two years ago, with japanese dev houses still pumping out games for the beleaguered console up until then.

Maybe, but I'm talking about games that were released in the United States. Hellboy is the one that comes to mind at this moment.

There was a major hardware revision of the PSX with a redesigned case and everything AFTER the PS2 launched, and it outsold the PS2 for quite some time.

4+ years after a generation change is a long time to see releases.
