That alphanumeric pager market died because of the rise of cell phones and the irony is that people use their cells to text more than they did with the pagers. |

IM was a huge, almost immediate hit when it was first introduced. Now it's moved to phones. I can see the appeal of txting--- You can txt someone without other people knowing you're "on the phone" etc....
IMHO txting should be free or very near so as part of the phone service. Also I see no reason why txting shouldn't move into the VOIP phone service as well. -- "Regulatory capitalism is when companies invest in lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians, instead of plant, people, and customer service." - former FCC Chairman William Kennard (A real FCC Chairman, unlike the current Corporate Spokesperson in the job!) |

| reply to PhoenixDown Alphanumeric pager market died because (a) the device was too expensive to be so limited and (b) that's ALL you could do, is page someone a message. Those two-way pagers were a fashion statement introduced by rap celebrities on BET.
Cell phone is different because you can send a text to someone saying, "call me", and get a call right away. |

Yup I had a SkyTel pager with alphanumeric paging and I could reply with a few stock answers to the pages sent to me. It was lame, but it worked. Probably paid 49.95 a month for the service now that I think of it. -- Stop worrying where you're going- Move on If you can know where you're going You've gone Just keep moving on......

| reply to robbob340 Two-ways are dead out here. You can find them for sale, but activating them is another story. There's just too much competition out there.
I know devices like the Mylo and other "keyboard centric" devices are still around...but if a person had a choice between a Mylo and the Wing/Ocean/Vu/etc, the carrier devices will win out. |
