Apparently most people have not gotten the big picture.

In my opinion, copying copyrighted material that one has purchased for ones own use is fine. Copying copyrighted materials one has purchased for a friend is theft. It does not matter what form of media the performance is recorded on, what the consumer is paying for is the performance whether it be recorded on a record or an integrated circuit. In the old days before there were copyright laws musicians had to depend on hand outs from benefactors to live on. They could not depend on a stable income from their work. The copyright laws changed that. If listeners stop paying for the music they want to listen to the performers and composers will get into another line of work.

Anybody dependent solely on the ethics of the customer base is going to bed hungry.

Ethics has no place in a capitalist system; there is the market and the law and nothing else.

Unless they come up with some magical formula, or enforcement mechanism, the music industry of the 20th century is dead. Start looking for a new market, because this one won't exist in {insert guess here} years.
