1 edit | [XP Pro] Unable To Reinstall WXP PRO- STOP: Error?
I'm trying to repartition, format, and reinstall Windows XP Pro on a hosed virus-trojan infected computer.
When I boot from the Windows XP Pro CD, and get to "Setup is Starting Windows" I get a blue screen STOP error.
STOP: 0x0000007B
Error states could be a boot sector virus or possibly a need for additional adapter drivers.
Ran Trend Micro Antivirus and it comes up empty.
All I really want to do at this point is reformat and reinstall.
I would appreciate any suggestions that will help me get beyond the blue screen STOP error.
EDIT: I failed to mention that this is a business computer. it's part of a small (12) computer network. I'm sure this must have something to do with the reinstall problems.
Thanks -- They may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel. -- Anonymous |

| Are you booting from within windows or a cold boot? Did you make a trend micro rescue disk(when it was first installed) and then cold booted from it to check for viruses? Another thing to think about is the possibility of a bad hard drive waiting to die on you. |

said by jaceg :or possibly a need for additional adapter drivers. If you have SATA drives, you will need the drivers for your controller, either on a floppy disk, or incorporated into an XP install image. As using a floppy is quickest, even if you need to hook up a drive just for the OS install, you might want to make sure the HD looks "empty" to Windows Setup..
Have a DOS bootdisk with DEBUG on it? Boot, run DEBUG, and, at the dash prompt, enter: The above wipes the MBR clean, and Setup will write a *fresh* one when you re-partition the drive.

| Thanks Zorack.
Thanks DOS.
This computer does have a SATA HD and an Intel ICH8R/DO/DH SATA RAID Controller.
Problem is, no floppy drive and no Dell Windows XP Pro recovery/reinstallation disk.
Any suggestions on how to get the controller drivers on with a CD instead of the floppy?
Thanks |

| reply to jaceg I once had a bunch of Dell 8400 PCs with exactly this predicament.
It was just a heckuva lot easier to take a working old floppy drive, and connect it to the floppy motherboard header on the motherboard, and be done with it.
I did not mount the drive or do anything fancy; just connected a power connector and a long floppy cable to the appropriate header.
You do have to go through the Dell Driver CD and pull the drivers for SATA, if you do not have them already on a floppy or have no way to download and unzip them to a floppy.
You just cannot under XP get it to accept when prompted for RAID or other drivers to allow a CD to be used. -- ============ MS-MVP 2004 - -2008, ASAP Member Users Helping Users

| reply to jaceg There are numerous reasons which can lead to stop 0x0000007B. Here are some common issues:
1. Corruption in the Master Boot Record (MBR)
2. An MBR virus
3. Device Driver problems (corrupt drivers, missing drivers, etc.)
4. Hardware issues (incompatible or damaged hardware) |
