| Netgear router settings
So I've been having issues setting up my wireless router
I'm assuming the IP address and DNS should be fine set to "get dynamically/automatically from ISP"
The sheet that came with the Netgear router says that I should have an account name from my ISP and leave the domain name blank. Is this "account name" supposed to be the name of the primary person on the billing statement or something else?
I've tried putting the MAC address as "use default" and I've also tried using the fixed address of the first computer that was connected to the modem. Does RCN lock onto a specific MAC address?
Which settings are right and what might I be missing? Thanks |

Hey sharpie, have you reset the cable modem since adding the router? You have to reset each time you add or remove a router or change the pc that is connected to the modem. I have a linksys instead of netgear and never had to set up an "account name".. You can reset the modem by either unplugging it (and removing the battery if its an Arris) or by pressing the reset button on the modem.
Hope this helps |

| nope. it was basically plug and play with the router. if you have changed several of the setting, i would recommend resetting the router to its defaults, unplug everything and then try powering up the modem first, then the router, then the pc/laptop.. |

| reply to sharpie129 Sharpie, the "Account Name" on your router is only needed if your ISP requires it, RCN does not & this could be stopping your connection if you have something on that line. I would take your router back to it factory defaults an make sure there is nothing in the Account Name section. Once back to factory defaults, insall it just like it was out if the box |

I have had some problems with the service locking onto MAC addresses for particular IP addresses using the Toshiba modem. Even after a restart of the modem I have had to spoof MAC addresses to get a device able to access the internet properly using a static IP. Without having called service it appears there is some timeout period but I haven't worked out the details of what they are doing. |
