It appears that the ONLY way that you cannot become a victim is to not have any cards period. The victims range from people who have never used the card anywhere (first charge ever to a card), to dormant cards, only used infrequently at B&M, to victims whose data was known to have been obtained from a hacked customer database on Rangerjoes.com. So it appears that even ultra safe habits can not prevent one geting hit. In fact, many victims report being hit on multiple cards, debit / credit issued by different institutions.
There really is no sure way to avoid being hit other than not having a card in the first place. As you will see at the end of the listed thread, 31 fraud sites were recently uncovered in the early stages of operation in the UK, processing hijacked UK card data. This is a multi year global operation, that has embedded itself in the system.
