| Optimizations (PPP compression, PPP Location, STP?)
I recently upgraded to th 3 mbps, and I want to get the absolute most out of my connection. I have a dd-wrt router. Someone said that att told them that moving the PPP off the modem would be good, is this true? If it were on the router, I could turn something called PPP compression on, would that make any difference? Also, does turning on STP do anything if I am not seeing problems? | | d_l Barsoom Premium,MVM join:2002-12-08 Reno, NV
| PPP off the modem isn't a good thing if you ever incur problems such as DSL sync loss, high CRC error rates, ATM circuit failure, etc. You don't have ready and instantaneous access to the modem's diagnostics.
That said there are advantages to splitting the load between the modem and your router (DDNS updates for instance) and letting the modem do everything, but the PPPoE connection and letting the router handle that. Ways to have continuous access to the modem diagnostics are described in this FAQ: »SBC DSL FAQ »How do I access the modem GUI thru a router - advanced methods? . | |
