Who to thank... who to blame...

I'm as concerned about privacy rights as anyone. But if you want to blame someone for their erosion then it's those who commit piracy and child porn on a grand scale. No one wants to prosecute porn, but child porn is another matter altogether. And piracy on a small scale wouldn't grab anyone's attention. But those who commit these crimes on the grand scale of megabyte, after gigabyte, after terabyte... they're the ones you need to blame.

You certainly can't blame the man for trying to stop it. And a site like Google or MySpace that lets all this crap happen, and keeps track of it to boot- Well you can't blame the man for making them cough it up. I'm not saying that MySpace condones or contains child porn. I'm AM saying though that SOMEONE is making it possible to transmit it across the net and around the world- a lot of someones. And that's where my point of view jumps from the Googles and MySpaces to the WWW.

It has always been said that if you build a better mouse trap the world will beat a path to your door. That is so true. Well the man has largely taken a hands off approach to the web until lately. But the greedy and the depraved have built the perfect storm, and the man is coming to the rescue. This is going to be as big a mess as that idiotic ruling that just came out of the Supreme Court about the Gitmo detainees.

"Prosecute Child Porn" and "Prevent Piracy" along with "Protect us from Terrorists" are the three most used EXCUSES for trying to roll back civil liberties.

The road to Hell is paved with Good intentions.

Man coming to the rescue? Unlikely. Coming in the name of greed and power and control --- definitely.

Spoken like the hypocrites that defend the 55 MPH speed limit, even though they speed themselves. There's no such thing as "a little piracy", "a little speeding" or "a little pregnant" - they're all either YES or NO. Stop making yourself feel better for downloading LESS - its still illegal. Almost all of the music videos on Youtube are copyright protected, and every time you watch one you're "downloading illegally distributed materials" in the eyes of the copyright holders. Never mind that some of the materials are not available otherwise, and that in some cases material thought long-lost is now available to everyone at the press of a finger or movement of a mouse.

Can you please illustrate one case where your civil liberty has been "rolled back"?

I'm sure I fear my government a lot more than you do. That's the nature of Conservatives. Thats why we're so upset over [narrowness of] the 5:4 Heller decision.

And yet, my phone has been tapped and transcribed many times over the years, and I never lose any sleep over it. I've known personally several whose domestic persecution rivals that which you only imagine takes place at Gitmo.

Are there nefarious forces in power (public and private) who would still find cause to justify a Kent State? Of course. The last good example, however, occurred under Janet Reno.

First of all pacifist I'm not wanting to rollback any civil liberties. The only civil liberty I want to rollback is the ACLU.

Okay ostrich, go ahead and stick your head back in the sand and hope that the evil goes away. Let the perverts and the greedy have there way. Then when the man comes stompin' with his big ole brogans on don't come cryin' here. You were warned. You've been warned all along and you've ignored it. You'll pull your head up out of the sand and say "hey! Big Brother came and stole my wide open wild wild west internet away.

I've long been an advocate of the WWW policing itself. I've posted about it here a few times. We should have done something about it a long time ago and the man would never have had to come crashing in. Now they'll never stop. And IT'S YOUR FAULT!

You can prosecute child porn, piracy, and terrorism without rolling back ANY CIVIL LIBERTIES! Let me ask you this- does prosecuting someone for simple bank fraud constitute a rollback of civil liberties? Because there are tons of records that have to be rounded up for evidence. One of the key things that has to be rounded up is the bank account info of the victims. If they only do their banking online then you have to grab that, along with any evidence that may reside on their ISP's server in case they had a system crash and lost it all. Is THAT a rollback of civil liberties?

We all have unalienable rights. The most wonderful thing about those rights is they are unbreakable as they are guaranteed by our most precious documents. But here is the reality... your rights end where mine begin. Your right to freedom and protection end if it infringes upon mine.

Your right to anonymity and protection end where they infringe on my personal property, my sovereign land, or my person. So yes I do believe we can combat child porn, piracy, and terrorism without rolling back civil liberties.

The WWW could have taken care of these problems a long time ago and the man wouldn't be here stomping around. But the WWW didn't and things are the way they are. And you hiding your head in the sand will not change a thing.

Blah blah, insult, insult, etc

Ok. Well, I certainly hope the evil goes away. At least he can't run for a third term.... as for sticking my head in the sand, no way. I'll help send 'em packing.

Yes, thanks for repeating my point.

Look man, what don't you get?

You an I would stand together shoulder to shoulder and draw the line in the sand and say no farther will you pass. And we would both turn to see who stands with us. I would not want to turn and see pirates and pornographers in my company.

Would it bother you to see those banned from the internet?

Censorship and no warrent record access, the DMCA have all stomped on our civil and legal rights. and usually in the name of "for the children, war on piracy, war on terror" and every time nothing changes. all the DMCA did was make it in thoery illegal for me to make a legal copy for personal backup of a DVD.
