Expiring browser? Bad idea

Any sort of scheme to make older versions "expire" is an invitation to abuses and ripoffs. Adobe has done this with its PDF reader for years, and used the resulting leverage over users to foist insecure bloat-ware on them.

If it were possible to get security fixes without changes in feature sets, there would be a better argument for equating use of an older version with lack of concern for security. In practice, there are real tradeoffs. New versions of Firefox, for example, have steadily added spyware-like "phone home" tricks and annoying "convenience" features along with the patches.
