Construction of contingency dozer lines to the west near Refugio Canyon is expected to be completed tonight. Weather conditions are predicted to be favorable, similar to the past few days allowing for aggressive fire suppression tactics. A MANDATORY evacuation remains in effect for West Camino Cielo west of the Windermere Ranch to the actual fire area. All other area evacuations have been downgraded to evacuation warnings or lifted completely. A road closure is in effect for W. Camino Cielo, west of Windermere Ranch. Damage assessments will take place today.<br><br>Current Status:<br>&#149;<br>The Gap Fire started in the West Camino Cielo area late Tuesday afternoon, 4 miles west of State Highway 154 and 3.5 miles north of Goleta, CA in the Los Padres National Forest.<br>&#149;<br>Fire is burning in 30-50 year old heavy chaparral fuels (15-20 feet tall), in extremely steep and rocky terrain.<br>&#149;<br>Last night the fire was active along the northeastern perimeter (West Camino Cielo and Old San Marcos Roads). The fire continued to move south toward Cathedral Oaks Road and West toward Tecolote Canyon. The incident had developed a consistent weather pattern change over the past few days. Winds blow from the east during the daytime hours, shifting to north in the afternoon and evening.<br><br>Evacuations:<br>&#149;<br>A MANDATORY evacuation order was issued at approximately 10:45 p.m. last night for the Elwood Canyon area.<br>&#149;<br>A MANDATORY evacuation is in place for residents in Glen Annie Canyon and La Patera Canyon (in the canyons proper), West Camino Cielo, Windemere, Haney Tract, Kinevan Area, Glen Annie Road to San Marcos Road &#150; north of Cathedral Oaks, Trout Club, Hidden Valley and the Painted Cave area.<br>&#149;<br>An evacuation WARNING is in effect from Winchester Canyon Road to Glen Annie Road north of Cathedral Oaks Road.<br>&#149;<br>An American Red Cross evacuation center has been established at San Marcos High School at 4750 Hollister Avenue, at the intersection of Turnpike Road and Hollister Avenue.<br>&#149;<br>The Santa Barbara County Animal Services will operate an emergency animal shelter at the Red Cross evacuation center location. Individuals who stay at the evacuation center can bring their household pets (dogs, cats, etc.) to this animal shelter. For further information call 805-681-4332.<br><br>Highway, Road and Area Closures:<br>&#149;<br>The following roads are on a hard closure, which means that no entry is permitted: Kinevan at State Highway 154, West Camino Cielo at State Highway 154, Glen Annie Road at Cathedral Oaks, La Patera Ranch Road north of Cathedral Oaks, Old San Marcos Road north of Cathedral Oaks to State Highway 154, Fairview north of Cathedral Oaks and Painted Cave at State Highway 154.<br>&#149;<br>The following roads are on a soft closure, which means that residents are allowed to enter with proof of residency: Fairview at La Goleta, Elwood Canyon, Santa Margarita, and San Antonio Creek Road at State Highway 154.<br>Agencies: U.S. Forest Service and Santa Barbara County Fire Department and other cooperators.<br>Incident Commander: Unified Command with Incident Commander Jim Smith of the U.S. Forest Service and Division Chief Bob Bell of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. At 3:00 a.m., about 1,000 houses were still under a mandatory evacuation order, which had been in effect since 8:40 p.m. The evacuation covered Painted Cave, Hidden Valley, the Trout Club, West Camino Cielo Road&#151;west of Highway 154, including Kinevan Road and the Haney Tract&#151;and Glen Annie and La Patera Canyons, which have been closed since Wednesday. The northern perimeter was also active but still holding along West Camino Road.<br><br>Evacuations:<br>&#149;<br>A MANDATORY evacuation is in place for residents in Glen Annie Canyon and La Patera Canyon (in the canyons proper).<br>&#149;<br>An EVACUATION WARNING is in place for areas above/north of Cathedral Oaks between Winchester Canyon and Fairview Avenue.<br>&#149;<br>An American Red Cross evacuation center has been established at San Marcos High School at 4750 Hollister Avenue, at the intersection of Turnpike Road and Hollister Avenue.<br>&#149;<br>The Santa Barbara County Animal Services will operate an emergency animal shelter at the Red Cross evacuation center location. Individuals who stay at the evacuation center can bring their household pets (dogs, cats, etc.) to this animal shelter. For further information call 805-681-4332.<br>&#149;<br>If you are not staying at the Red Cross evacuation center, you can bring your household pets to the Santa Barbara Humane Society at 5399 Overpass Road in Santa Barbara, CA. For further information call 805-964-4777.<br>&#149;<br>Evacuation of large animals (horses and livestock) is being handled by the Santa Barbara County Animal Services. Horses are being taken to the Earl Warren Fairgrounds, Barns A and B, at Calle Real and Las Positas (take the Las Positas exit off Highway 101).
