Hi,
shopping for an inexpensive laser printer. Anyone have experience between Samsung and HP?

| I'm not familiar enough with both to know about the durability but I can say that the HP will be much quieter than the Samsung. I've got a Samsung and you can hear it in another room when it does it's warm-up cycle. I used an HP laser at a temp job recently and it was almost silent, and faster from cold with the same quality.

Not having used the Samsung in question, i am not sure if this is an "expert" opinion, but, a couple of things:
First, the Samsung is definitley a cut below in features to the HP in question. The ML-1610, is only a USB 1.1 printer, with a max resolution of 600 dpi, with 2mb built in memory, whereas the HP P1005 is a USB 2.0 device, capable of 1200 dpi, with 8mb memory built in...
In other words, the HP is just a more capable laser right from the start, on that alone, if it comes between the two, I'd select the HP. I am NOT saying that the Samsung is in any way "bad", but a direct comparison between the two clearly favors the HP.
We use low-cost HP LaserJets where I work, the old (now) 1200 LaserJets, and I'm pleased to say that out some 40+ units, in use for over 5 years now, not one has yet needed service...not too shabby at all! Now, these do not get huge throughput, each is used by an individual user, so page totals are far from awesome, but 40+ units over a 5+ year operating period, with zero issues is a fair indicator of quality to me!

We have a couple 1010's and 1012's (the P1005's earlier models) and they are rock solid, never really having a problem. For light to medium duty they are great. I was so impressed I bought one for my home. Bought it used, with a cartridge, a year later, with some light duty printing, still going strong. I swear by HP printers, I personally have never had a problem with any model I have ever owned from them. |

The way you can go wrong is if you refill your own cartridges or when you find out what your new one costs (Sticker Shock)... Or you find out that you have to replace not only the toner, but also the drum...
I don't know about the HP Laser printer, But Samsungs drum is built into the cartridge on most models.
If you want to refill your cartridge you might have to have a new chip or chipresetter to do so.
On my samsung 2250 laser printer the drum and toner are all one. Refilling the cartridge requires removal of a few screws and 160grams of toner. Done in five minutes for a total cost of $20.00
Sure the Samsung is a little noisy, But so is my Epson C86 Inkjet printer....:D

I won't tell you which one is better. I will tell you that I purchased a Samsung M-1710 about 18 months ago. Nice little printer if I could only find toner for the thing. I have to go to remanufactured cartriges, which I don't like to do. |

Although not by a huge margin, separate toner/drum lasers are more economical per page...though not by a wide margin. I have an older Okidata B4350, with separate consumables, and my cost per page is lower than either the HP P1005/P1006, or the Samsung 1710.
However, at a max price of $60 for a replacement cartridge for the HP P1005/P1006, with a yield of some 1500 pages, that is 4 cents per page...and I can always find discounts on these...for example, Staples has a $20 rebate right now on 'em...that drops the price for a genuine, new, HP cartridge to $40.99...or less than 3 cents per page. Also, you can almost always save $10 - $15 on "2-packs". So about 3 cents per page is a realistic expectation, using "stock" refills.
Now, it is correct that the Samsung will yield a little lower cost per page, perhaps all of 1 cent...but beyond a doubt the HP is quieter, faster, and most likely more trouble-free.
Re-filling toner in a toner/drum combo cartridge is OK, but frankly, if I can not afford to buy a replacement cartidge, I am most likely printing too high a volume to make a smaller consumer-based laser a good decision in the first place. If you have the patience and willingness to mess with it, certainly you can lower your cost per page. At a couple cents per page printing though, I simply do not print so much that the effort is justified by the savings.
For my Okidata, a toner cartridge (no drum) is all of $36.99 for a 3,000 page yield, before any rebates...

Refilling toner is really not that bad. The refill kits come with gloves and a funnel. And of course some of the NEWER cartridges have chip now that have to reset or replaced. It is still far cheaper to learn to refill them then to buy a new one.
My refilled cartrideges last twice as long as the new ones do.

| Again, I am not really knocking re-filling your own carts, I never blame anyone for saving a buck.
But, at a range of 1.2 to 4 cents a page (and the 4 cents is at the absolute high end) for B&W laser printing, unless you are printing reams of stuff, it just is not that large an expense. My toner carts are rated at approx. 3,000 pages, and that lasts me well over 2 years!
In my case, the laser will likely be "retired" before I go through a drum!
