the f5 box is on the first floor located where the DSL modem is, the comcast modem and the fiber optic connection come in at the basement, but then are routed up to the first floor to the f5 box, then it comes back down stairs to the router then is ether routed to the DMZ or the LAN, i got it off ebay, for $300 + Shipping. |

1 edit | reply to paulmataruso Nice job man. I used to be a tech for Comcast and the crap we threw out almost amazed me. For your age your doing pretty damn good. I've wanted to get into this kind of stuff but ditching the day job for this is kind of tough. The wife would murder me. At least you started before there is a wife. lol. -- "There are two American flags flying on the property I reside on. Anyone who tries to take them down will be rendered inoperative." -Lindy |

Cool setup, dumpster diving FTW! |

But yea, virtualize
Just get a nice HP with 8 cores and max ram (72 gb), fibre chan storage , and vm ware's ESX + an additional server box for virtual center and physical to virtual tasks (so you don't have to reconfigure everything).
Heck you can do it in one rack |

| reply to erikthebean nah, it is running out behind my house then over along the stone wall, they are like right next to me, so it is just running thought some of that Orange fiber protector tube, the fiber is pretty tough, so i am not really worryed about anything happeing to it, it is udnerground like 7 inches up until the stone wall, then it surfaces, for a couple yards, then goes back under to there place, then surfaces then thougth a little hold in the cement on the side of the house. -- -- Paul A. | reply to erikthebean i have the power supply for the node(big black thing, 90volt output? really heavy, looks like it goes in a rack or box or something), it is sitting on my work bench right now, and i have some of those fiber modulator things(big Grey, rack mountable), that convert the video/audio into the fiber optic signal(i think it uses some type of DWDM to encode the signal). Then from the node, i have some of that hard line stuff, that goes to a line extender, which is like a big silver thing just like the node, forcept smaller. then from there more hard line, then to an 8 port Motorola tap, then on the tap there is a terminator thing on the output side. and connected to the tap, i have a tv, set to channel 10, and i am not sure how to get the audio/video thing to come up on the tv, and i am pretty sure the node works. BTW, the input for the fiber modulator thing is an xbox, lol. |
