uninet : You get unlimited long distance calling from Verizon for $19.99 or just local? The choice here is Charter for $29.95 or AT&T for $40 or more.

I'm in the unique place of having "CBR" (switched) service from Charter rather than VoIP. I'm on an old AT&T Broadband system, which used that method. Reliability is about the same as a POTS line. The worst problem is most Charter phone techs aren't use to working on the CBR system and struggle with it somewhat.

Your price makes me feel somewhat better. Add on $15 for a DVR, $5 for an extra digital box, and $40 for two telephone lines and you're at my monthly rate, and HBO/Stars/Cinemax/Showtime come "free." Maybe you should try to get a bit more out of them. :-)

Too bad about the phone service -- sorry to hear about that!

anon : For comparison I have:

- basic
- expanded basic
- what used to be the family and info tier
- one digital box
- 10/1 internet

I pay $85.99/month. I would never pay more than $20 for phone service. I get unlimited calling from Verizon for $19.99/month. Charter won't touch that price. That is not a promo from Verizon either.

I just can't see moving my land line to Charter. They just don't have the same reliability as a POTS line. Actually the only reason I don't have phone from Charter is due to a fiasco that happened when we purchased our current house.

The house had Charter telephone, cable and internet. I called and said I wanted to keep the existing service that the former owner had. Charter said "No can do. We need to roll a turck out and disconnect current customer first. We then need to roll a truck again when you signup and do a check of all of the wiring on the home."

I was quite pissed at the time. I asked how long it would be before I had service. They said that it would be at least two weeks. I walked outside the house the very same day and saw the Verizon box on the house. I called up Verizon and aksed how long it would take them. They asked for my address and then asked which plan I wanted. I asked what the cheapest plan was that they had for my area that included unlimited calling. They said that would be $19.99. I took that plan.

The nice lady put me on hold for about two minutes. She then asked if I could test to make sure I had service. I plugged in my analog phone and viola I had service. Now "THAT" is service. I have never left. Verizon knows customer service.

Charter could have done the EXACT same thing. They however wanted to CHARGE me for an initial hookup. When I finally got TV and Internet installed I presented the installer with the free install coupon from the USPS welcome packet. He acted like he had never seen one of the coupons before. He then said I would need to pay for each outlet he hooked up. I pointed out the wording on the coupon included hookup of new TV's. So I got the entire initial hookup for free along with a one year promo.

Two weeks later a guy showed up at my door claming to be Charter's regional sales rep. He was wondering why I did not take the phone service. I explained all of the above and my VERY good experience with Verizon. He then shook his head and said "I am sorry to hear that. I have tried to have Charter change the install procedures." He left after that.

So the sales guy knows about the lousy practices, and probably has no control to change any of the deceptive practices.

/END RANT.

uninet : Thanks, everyone. After hassling with Charter for several hours, I think I basically ended up with the exact deal I had before. $147 (supposedly) pre-tax for 2 lines (one with unlimited long distance), a DVR, a second digital box, total view, 10 meg internet and Biggest.

The 10 meg is the one change, going up from 5 meg.

From the sound of things, this seems to still be a pretty good deal, I guess?

Triple Play Renewal Deal?

uninet : Hi everyone,
My St. Louis area triple play bundle is coming to an end, the so-called "Charter Bundle" (98.13). Above the standard Biggest Package, Unlimited Long distance phone service and 5 meg internet, I have a second local-only phone line, a DVR, and the total view tier.

The pre-tax total is $147; when I called today to inquire about re-upping, the best bundle Charter now has -- according to the rep I talked to -- would be $164.

Does that sound right? Anyone know of a present or soon coming promotion that would be better? I had heard Charter was actually dropping its prices because of U-verse, so I was wondering if perhaps I could dig deeper and get something better.

Thanks for your help!

-Tim
