Not that I am against anybody wishing to run a "lean" system, but far too many folks end up borking themselves by pruning one too many processes...quite akin to trying to remove bits and pieces of the OS that they don't like/want.

If you want "lean" get Linux and you can run a minimalist system...really, for better or worse, that is not Vista's cachet.

Besides which, Vista does a rather good job freeing up resources as needed. Just because one system may be pruned back on processes running, does not guarantee that it will run one iota faster/better than a system running the typical mix of stuff. In fact, the major tangible difference is primarily in boot-up time.

Makes sense and with Vista fully loaded, and 80-some processes running, I'm barely using 40% of my RAM. Don't see what all the fuss is about (except when the minimalist posts here when something breaks due to preventing processes from running). ;-)
Just so! It is understandable that one thinks that the more processes "running", the less resources avaialable, but not everything is actively using resources at the same time! The actual number of processes running is a moot point...rather what resources are available for a desired task, yes?

Keep in mind, this is one of Vista's stronger points, by the way!

The biggest problem I encountered was IE crashing on a regular basis. I managed to get my processes down to 40, but that was not the culprit.

I think an overlooked factor is the Add-ons under Tools. There are numerous Add-ons I never or rarely use, and once I disabled close to 3/4 of them, performance increased noticeably and no more IE crashes.

Forget the number of processes, it is truly secondary to one glaring problem, insofar as running games goes:

Your "powerhouse" AMD Turion TL56 (or even worse, TK-57?), w/Geforce GO 6150 graphics...simply is not a gaming powerhouse whatsoever, whether you run Vist, or XP :( You bought a budget notebook, and are getting the performance out of it that it was designed to give...

The 1.8 Turion is an "ok" cpu, far from a powerful solution, but ok...however, the integrated GO 6150 in terms of gaming? Utterly anemic...

BTW, please do not get me wrong, I am not knocking the notebook, but it simply is not adequate at all as a gaming machine. I have an AMD Turion TL-58 w/GO 7150 graphics...and it is a fine general-purpose, budget notebook...but I bought it with zero intentions of doing any gaming with it...were that the case, I would have settled for nothing less than discrete graphics...

This is not a "Vista" thing, rather not the right hardware for the job...cutting back processes will not give you any better graphics capability, the GO 6150 just does not have much horse-power for gaming.

As far as ReadyBoost? As you already have 2gb ram, it likely will give scant improvement...to each his own, but I have tried it with 2gb ram, and the effect, if any, was negligible. I hear that in computers with low memory for Vista, say 512mb, ReadyBoost may really be a help, but not much so once you have an adequate amount of ram to begin with.

On the other hand, I have no problems whatsoever running Quicktime movies without choppiness, and I have not pruned back a lot of processes at all...that may be another issue entirely.

Sorry, should add that I had XP to around 20+-3 or 4, prior research shows some have managed to go under 20, not sure how they do that...and if the system would even be stable. Boot time on this machine is 82 secs, want it under 40 if possible.
