Well...

10M/1.5M is better than 6M/768M, but not by much.

They should simply forget about U-Verse, and just use FTTP.

If they did that I *might* be interested in using them for things other than phone, since of course for local service they're the only choice.
Mainly because FTTP costs a lot more than U-verse. When you can terminate the fiber at one area and service thousands instead of terminating it at one home and making $100 a month (at best) for cable, phone, and internet, its a no brainer from a decision making process. This is why Verizon FIOS has really only been deployed in very nice neighborhoods.

FTTP will come down in price over time.

$100 for all that? How did you get that figure? Are you talking about profit, or just revenue?

If you mean just revenue then I don't see how you get $100. It's very easy to go over $100 with two services, or even just Internet.

It's all about making the right investment. The initial investment is going to cost the most, but then you don't have to go back and redo it. If ATT wants to truely complete with FIOS in the future, it's going to have to go back and redo it's wiring... Now how smart is that... NOT VERY.

As a FIOS customer I can honestly say... the darned thing works, yes it took the tech 5 hours to run the wires and get everything where it needed to be... but once again, 7 months later... FIOS makes my old cable connection feel like Dial Up.

Just profit if they are lucky. Thats if the customer gets every service they provide. Most customers just get a couple services they need like TV and internet.

I should have clarified.

First, the right investment is not thousands of dollars on FIOS to people who can't afford it or don't want it. BBR members would die for a FIOS connection, but Verizon is only interested in deploying it for people who are going to be long term subscribers and for people who will get multiple services.

Most people these days are happy with a 1500/384 connection at home because its cheap. They browse the web a little, and check their mail and thats it. Which is why a lot of broadband providers are making smaller tiers to entice those people to get their service.

I am not debating that FIOS isn't awesome because it is. Any BBR member would love that service. It just won't be widespread anytime soon until the price of installation comes down.

Not true in our area for FiOS. It's available to $700K homes and $150K homes, apartments and condos. They plan to wire our entire county within 4 to 5 years.

4-5 years would be considered "over time".

You're dreaming. The most expensive Uverse I could come up with (8 receivers, HD, U400, Max internet) is about $200/month. Add $15 for Playboy channel if you really want it all.

$100/month profit = 50% gross margin, and that ain't happening.

Please re-read what I was talking about. I was talking about FIOS profit, not Uverse. Secondly, I wad adding in every service FIOS has to offer. You are right though, even that may be a little high for even FIOS.

And it is offered currently in lower and upper income areas in our county.
