The Real Question is

WiMax is not going to be available EVERYWHERE... so will the WiMax cards/units have EVDO Rev. A (which is more widely available) available as a backup?

Sprint intends to offer WiMAX/EVDO combo cards as well - Samsung has one. Not sure if they'll be available for first launch though.

Sprint may keep the Xohm name for combo services offered by SprintPCS, such as with an EVDO/WiMAX card. The new Sprint/Clearwire company probably won't delve into EVDO but SprintPCS may resell 'new' Clearwire services with Sprint's other services under the Xohm name. So in a way, SprintPCS will resell Sprint/Clearwire services in the way that cable partners will resell the 'new' Clearwire service.

Wouldn't be good for me... I'd want one that hands off to GSM/UMTS, not 1x/EVDO.

You'll have to wait for LTE.

Nope, you aren't the only one who feels that way.
