Like I said, we are only about 30 statute miles inland from the Pacific coast here in inland Mendocino County in NW CA (Redwood Valley), so even on the hottest of days we get a nice, moist and cool onshore flow every night, in fact, last night it was a chilly 45.
KCrimson : If money and resources were no object, I'd be with those that like it cool in the house during the summer. I'd probably set the AC to about 70 when occupied. We currently keep the AC's off (3 window units - small 2 bedroom walk-in) when the apartment is unoccupied, and about 74 to 76 when they're on (and we purposefully DO shut them off to save money for hours at a time, and then turn them back on when its uncomfortable). My son keeps his room shut with the AC on whenever he's home, and sometimes when he opens the room you can almost see frost vapors in the air. :)
In the winter, the landlord just recently installed a thermometer for us to control ourselves. We're still unsure if we're now paying the heating bill - we DID notice at the end of the winter that our gas bills appeared higher - when we moved in the heat was included. I CAN'T ask him - the mere question WILL get us evicted I'm sure.
We leave the heat set at about 74 when we're home in the winter - sometimes less, sometimes more, but that's an average. When we're not home we let it dip into the mid 60's.

Am I the only one that wants to choke the weatherman/woman that cheerfully declares "tomorrow will be a beauty with temperatures in the mid 80's!"? I want to see that weatherperson doing their report without AC, and watch the makeup melt down their plastic faces. :)
--
Confusion Will Be My Epitaph

dlconkey : Dadkins,

Assuming it's a modern system, check the thermostat programming for the low evaporator limit. It might be set a tad high. Or, if it's older, check the limit switch, likely in the air plenum (on the evap). I've had that happen at work where it was steamy and uncomfortable due to the AC cycling on and off w/o cooling the room. w/o maintenance's permission (if they only knew the shit I messed with there!, I found the tech manual on the web, and found how to program the system from the slave thermostat (it was a two stage with the master a floor down. He'd always say "here's Dave again fucking with the thermostat!"

But anyway, you could enter parameters via a rotary internal switch and actually watch the evap temp. It would steadily go down to about 38, then kick out leaving us upstairs with no cooling for 10 minutes due to the now active restart timer running.. Turns out you could toggle it between 38 and 34 degrees. That did the job and then I froze because some people liked it cold!

It sure sounds like an evaporator temp limit cutting out.
dlconkey : That is crazy! I face due East (all I see is Lake Michigan... terrible view... ;) ) and in the morning, when it hits 80+ in here, I'm not happy. And I'm a naturist!

But, the really old, 100W output, telecom rack cooling blower, with twin centrifugal blowers, siting on top of where the air comes out sucking 500CFM, with air outlets which just happen to be at about 30 degrees so as to face into the room, triples the air flow, and with the new chiller and cooling tower 55 floors up, I get a water temp of oh, 48 degrees. A few years ago, you were lucky to get 55 degree cooling water which sounds cold, but isn't. Without a 30+ differential, it gets warm and sticky in here. No complaints now! ;)

So I keep it as cold as needed to be comfortable, typically 75 days, 73 nights. Many times actually as high as 78.

I don't pay for the cold water, just the fans.

Doesn't dehumidify as well as a typical AC (whose evap runs 33 degrees or so), and that's part of the equation, but right now, it's 72 degrees and 63% RH... Humidity a tad higher than normal, and it's a steam bath outside, but my air cooled butt is happy as a um... clam-shell! ;-)

You sound like my father... On trips, the windows would be open until about 90, THEN the AC went on which actually WASTES gasoline!.... Or, at home, it was set at 78 until it got to 75 outside after sundown, (at 90% humidity!) and then AC off, windows open, which of course was way worse to begin with.

I'm an EE, and gave up trying to explain to Dad that A) cooler outside air, that's steamy feels much worse than a dry, 78 degree house, and worse, B) by filling the house with moisture like that, the next day, the AC has to work twice as hard just removing the water from the air and forget actually COOLING it!

False economy they call it!

Moist air will always consume more energy by condensing the water out of the air. Basic thermodynamics. Most people refuse to believe that, thinking "well the outside air is cooler..."

To them I say get a thermometer, hydrometer, and a clock, and run your own tests! The time to lower the indoor temp will take forever until the humidity has been lowered.

It takes mucho energy, but you could always save the condensate for the house plants as it's basically close to purified water.... with a little extra lead in it...

Some people actually tell me they hate AC! Well, I hate being uncomfortable!

Might be different if I actually had to PAY for a 10 ton system burning up 10+kWh a day... lol

If it's hot, crank the AC!
--
Dave, Chicago - Edgewater/Uptown, @ the lakefront
