Thank you kolla The experts recommend a clean install by disabling any protection within Spybot S&D (i.e. Teatimer, SD Helper) and 'undoing' immunisation, then uninstall Spybot S&D 1.5.2 through Add/Remove Programs and you're clear to install Spybot S&D 1.6 EDIT: Must have been really tired when I posted this last night -- just noticed mispelling "your" instead of "you're"; sorry -- Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy - Anonymous |

Clean install it is then Got it..thank you. Only thing I noticed was immunization for K-Meleon wouldn't "take"..all others went smooth, and scanning is definitely quicker |

Sorry, not very savvy with these things. How do I "undo" immunization? I have tried looking in the tools and the settings tabs, but cannot find anything. |

Go to immunize section & hit "undo" button Same place you go to apply. |

Thanks ! 1.Was the anonymous poster "kolla" the one and only real PepiMK? If no, why using the name "kolla"? If you are not PepiMK, I don't like that you are using the name "kolla". If yes, hey PepiMK, thanks (!), but why posting as an anonymous user? You are well respected !!! 2.At the moment I have not upgraded. I have to admit that I am worried about that OpenSBI. » spybot.info/en/index.html quote: OpenSBI Safer Networking also announces OpenSBI, our attempt at opening up the fight against malware to anyone who wants to participate. OpenSBI means we've published documentation and tools that anyone can use to create their own malware detection patterns for use with Spybot-S&D, and share those with other Spybot-S&D users.
Diversity - everyone can create detection templates for any software, without depending on a central authority to acknowledge its threat. Neutrality - we cannot be bought to remove detections from our database, but if you do not believe us, you can simply publish your own rules against some malware. Continuity - OpenSBI ensures that you'll get updates as long as someone is interested in updating the database (which does not mean we intend to do less work in adding new detections). Flexibility - as a system administrator using the network edition, you can make sure that working time is not wasted by employees playing the latest Moorhuhn clone if you add your own detection for it. Keep in mind that some relaxation is said to even improve work results.
I am not sure whether I understand things right. How are the detections, made by folks not related to Spybot S&D, shared to other users? Are those detections looked at by the Spybot S&D folks for quality control? Can we, as users, ignore those OpenSBI "detections"? Meaning, do we have the option, like the beta-signatures, not to install them? |

Thanks for the update!
I don't mean to derail this thread, but are there actually two separate domain names for Spybot S&D? The OP posted spybot.info, and yet I have safer-networking.org in my bookmarks? Are they both authentic? -- "People say that money isn't the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made." -Joan Rivers |

Thank you, kolla. said by Alwill:... 'undoing' immunisation, then uninstall Spybot S&D 1.5.2 through Add/Remove Programs and you're clear to install Spybot S&D 1.6 ... Does anybody know HOW important it is to undo immunizations before uninstalling for clean install of 1.6? My copy of Spybot 1.5.2.20 keeps hanging while undoing immunizations. Had to stop it with Task Manager three times. There were fewer Protected items after each, but 81,702 items were still Protected of the Total 91,077. I re-immunized to restore all Protected items, hoping a fresh start would clear it after exiting and restarting but it didn't. It hung at the same number (90,695) as the first time through. |

You can undo immunizations manually outside of SpyBot S&D if you want. First create a system restore point. Open RegEdit and navigate to.... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ select the "ActiveX Compatibility" key. Then export that key to your desktop in case you want to restore it later. Then select the "ActiveX Compatibility" key and delete it. Voila. Your immunizations are gone. -- Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning. Thank you, antdude . I'll join and post at the Spybot forum if that's what it takes. Edited to add a comma. |

Thank you, jmorlan . It's tempting to follow the quick, manual instructions but I've only used RegEdit a few times when following specific instructions...and can't even remember how to access it. By "export" do you mean copy and paste/save? Why might I want to restore that key later? Would someone competent enough to do it manually be asking the above questions? |

Go to Start | Run and type regedit in the "run" box. That will open the regedit program.
To "export" a key, you select the key and then right click (or go to "file") and "export" and regedit will prompt you to save the key under any name you want. It will default to having a *.reg extension. Once saved, it can be easily merged back into your registry.
There are several reasons you might want to restore the key later. One is that my advice might not be all that good. You always want to be able to restore any changes in case there are unforeseen consequences. It's a good idea to be extra careful when editing the registry. That's why I recommended making a restore point first and save (export) any keys before you make changes.
If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry, then it's probably best not to do it. But we all had to start somewhere. -- Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning. (George Carlin) |

said by jmorlan:... But we all had to start somewhere. I will -- soon. There was an update for Spybot 1.5.2.20 late this afternoon, so the 1.6 upgrade seems less urgent. When I posted this morning it was past the time it's usually released and I thought it wasn't going to happen. Thank you for the detailed instructions. I've printed them to use if Spybot continues to be temperamental. |
