New subscriber wanting to do my own install

Hi, I need to obtain a Satellite internet connection. To save costs, I wish to install myself. Here are my questions
-I understand the two supported modems (7000 series).
-Will an older dish (6000 series) work with the newer modems? If not, how do I identify the appropriate dish
-Will the dish from satellite TV work (I have one of those already installed)
-Does the dish need a completly clear shot of the south or will some blockage still work

Any other input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
paul

By reading your questions I recommend to get an installer.

One key to a successful satellite internet link is the installation. Proper mounting, grounding, aiming and cross-pol will eliminate a number of variables that will affect your system.

I am not in the residential installation field so I have nothing to gain by recommending you find a qualified installer with references to get you up and running.

A recent commercial customer tried to save time by re-pointing his own dish. He wound up with 5 days of no connection and the cost of bringing an installer out to fix the job anyways. Could have saved a lot of time calling the installer first!

Good Luck

yes im just a 10 year old boy so I i have nothing to gain either since you know i dont do installs but you probably should most likely get somebody out there(make sure they are good) trying to point it yourself is very hard probably as hard as threading 20 needles in 1 minute.. which would be really hard

It can be done, but you will need to establish an account with Hughes, and get your account specific information from them -- which you may need the help of a Hughes certified installer to do. In any case, here are the answers to your questions.

A 6000 series dish will work just fine with the newer 7000 series modems, but not with the 9000.

The dish itself from your satellite TV installation might be made to work, but the hardware which is mounted on it is not compatible, and it would be impractical to mount the required hardware on your existing dish. Far better to buy dish and hardware together.

You need a clear line of sight to the specific satellite to which Hughes will assign you. The rest of the southern sky doesn't matter.

If you insist on doing a Hughes self install you might want to talk to Montana satellite. Google their website.
You also might want to look at Skycasters and Starconnect. They are one way systems that encourage self installs.

I went the self install route so it can be done but if you have never played with these systems before it's not for the faint of heart. At the very least you need a satellite meter and a good understanding of how everything works and where to find the satellite in the arc. These dishes are much more sensitive than the pizza pan dishes used for Directv or Dish network. Move a Hughesnet dish more than 1/8" in any direction or up and down and you have lost the signal. I did my own and I still don't like peaking the beast.

By the time you spend the money on the supplies to do it correctly and the equipment "not to mention the headace of doing it yourself", you will be better off just getting a new system and having it professionally installed correctly.
