| reply to winchester73 same thing just happened to me, and I'm a relative neophyte, but after 30 minutes of unplugging router, checking our other pc (that still had net access), I figured it out. I can't imagine how many people - and it WILL be thousands - will end up with this problem and not know that it's an update/ZA conflict issue.
For now, I'll keep ZA running and do without the update, which I uninstalled - it's a relief just to know that other people are contending with this and trying to address the problem. I'd hate to ditch ZA for the Windows Firewall. |

For the time being we suggest you uninstall KB951748 until the issue has been resolved.
We will post when we have more information"

Eeks, what to do? Based on that DNS article posted earlier, I think I will leave ZA at Medium and hide behind my router until the dust settles. |

Not sure how many websites you frequent winchester73 but I just might hardwire the IPs of all of my Favorites into the Hosts file and bypass the DNS system for a while. -- Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.

| reply to winchester73 Wow!!!!! Came very close to installing this update. I did a system restore point and almost hit the install button. But decided to check here first. Glad I did as I use an old version of ZA 6.5.737. Now I don't know what to do since I have no plans to update ZA since I used it in conjunction with Linksys router. |

| reply to winchester73 The Microsoft naming scheme is overly complex and rather confusing. Here's what I have found out in a few minutes of clicking around.
* MS08-037 is the Microsoft patch for the DNS problem discovered by Dan Kaminsky and patched by a bunch of vendors today.
* Kb article 951748 at support.microsoft.com/kb/951748 is a kind of umbrella summary of MS08-037.
* In the bulletin "for IT professionals" about Ms08-037, and also in the "home user" version of the bulletin, and again in the monthly summary for IT folks, ms08-037 is identified as 953230 and '951748' is not used.
The DNS vulnerability is serious and one cannot "hide behind a router" as one poster mentioned; in web use or other internet activity you're probably making DNS requests all the time.
Therefore I would suggest keeping the patch and using a different local firewall for application control, or adjusting ZA to "medium" - then it's fine to rely on the firewall in the router. |

| reply to La Luna Then, it is not a Microsoft fault, but Checkpoint for not making sure that their product was compatible with the latest updates & Service packs. What gets me, is that Software Manufacturers have the opportunity to work hand in hand with MS, but refuse to do so, because it will cost them money. |

1 edit | reply to winchester73 Thank you, thank you.
I am on a backup laptop, running Windows 2000 I have not run for over 4 months. I knew there was a connection between the download of todays updates and my lack of being able to go back on the net after rebooting.
I am on wireless, cable - powercycled all and could ping websites, the wireless router, cable modem, yahoo, google in command window. but nothing else. I only spent 45 minutes, till I recalled I had this w2k laptop under my bed.
I'll try the fix.
edit: took 5 minutes to fix on other laptop with XP Pro. Though I am not happy about lowering security settings on Zone Alarm, it worked.
Unable to unistall the MS update - got an error that it could not be found or some such crap. So I'll have to run ZA at this lower security setting, till there is a fix. --
Darn, its gettin that time to go to Wallymart to gits me picture taken agin.

| reply to jaykaykay This problem has something to do with what version of ZA one is using. A friend of mine just called me asking me for help saying he lost his internet after the Microsoft update today. He uses ZA as well but his version is 7.0.470.000, so i told him to uninstall the KB951748 and reboot his system and he should be back online which he is now. -- Advertising is legalized lying. - H.G.
