Oh, and thanks A LOT for the tip on stopping the DNS Client service. I think my computer is running faster now.

Always learning. Fantastic thread!

Funny you should mention CA. I had a user out here in Northern California that is doing GIS work on a fire that suddenly couldn't surf the net. He stated that some updates installed and then it quit. Had to uninstall these two updates to get him working again. He was having a coronary because he wastry to get map data for the fire to make maps for the firefighters.

Re: MS update KB951748 and ZoneAlarm --- PROBLEM

I tried setting the zone alarm to medium thinking it would re learn but it still cuts everything of including AVG update - at least it lets me know it is stopping things, but does not give me any options to allow, but the only way of getting on line - including letting Firefox go to the Zone alarm site for help - is to turn it off!
Anybody know what the update does? I am now using the microsoft firewall but not sure it is doing anything!

Just discovered the same problem (been offline). I suspected it was my recent MS Update. I changed ZAF slider to medium, and am able to get to dslreports. Will apply fixes as described.

Does this patch only cause problems for users that have Zonealarm installed or does it also affect users without it on their systems? I don't have ZA installed on my system, I just have a modem and hardware firewall combination. Will I encounter problems when I install the patch? It appears that some users, from what I've read over the 23 pages, have experienced problems with their routers and the loss of internet.

Unlikely, but there are few guarantees in life.

Make a system restore point or image your system prior to installing it.

A free imaging program is available here, for anybody that doesn't have one:

Thanks again, Pentacle, for your suggestions, but my Linksys router simply will not work again since the KB951748 patch fiasco.

Right now I'm inundated with work and will concentrate on that, working on my desktop computer with the working cable modem. I will say this though. It is absolutely astonishing to me that Linksys has said NOTHING whatsoever on their Web site concerning the problem. It looks like no one wants to take responsibility for this entire fiasco--not Microsoft, not Zone Alarm, not Linksys. Frustrating.

Thanks again. You've been great. I'll let you know if I (or someone else) ever figures this out. Best to you!

I have updated ZA with the new version and installed the MS patch on two machines, one wired, one wireless, using a Linksys WRT54GS router. I have had no issues with my Linksys router.

I've had no issues with my router, but have had enough with ZAP, and went to Comodo this evening. We'll see how that goes...

If you change the device connected to a cable modem (for instance, insert or remove a router), you must re-boot the cable modem. This has nothing to do with Linksys, or ZoneAlarm, or KB951748.

I have 3 machines, One connected to the router via CAT5 cable which all I had to do was uninstall the update. A Vista laptop that was not effected. But my wife's computer which connects via a linksys usb wireless adapter will not connect. I uninstalled the update. Installed the new zonealarm update. No luck. Turned zonealarm off. No luck. Any suggestions. I am beginning to believe this is more than a ZoneAlarm problem. Help!

On XP, I cannot get my computer to work.

When my internet first went down, I installed the update and everthing was cool.

2 days later, it stopped working again.

Setting ZA firewall to medium or off did not work.

Uninstalling ZA and/or the update did not work.

Reistalling the new ZA did not work.

Uninstalling everything and reinstalling everything did not work.

I am out of ideas.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

MotherNature, your post was music to my ears. I have ZAFree 4.5.538.001 and have been avoiding this update, but did download the latest ZA version in case I needed it. I just installed KB951748 and my internet access is fine. Thank you so much.

Sincerely, Libra

My WRT54G worked fine two years. After kb951748 it is gone. Even uninstalling the update. I did everything and it did not come back. And it is not dead. Connecting the computer by wire to port 1 on the router is possible to ping and access the router login page. However the computer does not recognize it anymore. This kb951748 and ZA did damages beyond my understanding. Hope you get yours back.
Thanks
Blao

FWIW I fixed a customer yesterday who had the remnants of ZA free on their machine. They'd uninstalled it, but it left bits of itself behind. Apparently, vsmon was still installed and loading at startup. I had to boot in safe mode and delete the directory WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZoneLabs\ . I also took some leftover ZA entries out of msconfig.

This procedure restored the machine's access to the Internet. Before I deleted the directory, it had an IP address, but couldn't ping or trace out [pings returned 'error 65', which means 'access violation']. There wasn't any router installed, but I'll bet I could have pinged it if there were, given how ZA works.

If you don't feel comfortable rooting around in your Windows directories try downloading, installing, then uninstalling the latest ZA free. I haven't tested this solution, but it should fix the problem I described above.

I'm starting to run into some problems now.

I've noticed that for the last couple of days, I've been getting more lag and dropped connections. Now tonight I've been kicked off the Internet entirely (as in can't even get to the router) for up to half an hour at a time. I uninstalled the hotfix again, and that seems to have provided a partial fix, but I'm still seeing traceroutes with random dropped packets and complete disconnections. Also, I cannot at all get to the config page on my router (Linksys WRT45G) and attempting to do so kills my connection. I have to repair my connection from the Network Connections panel to get anything back.

What's going on with this?

Hi, so it looks like the only way to install MS update KB951748 with Zonealarm is to upgrade to the newest version, 7.0.483.000...unless you're using 4.5.538.001.

Do I have that right?

Thanks!
